Anyway, we were watching a really bad schlock exploitative 1980's fantasy movie called "Sorceress" and had a good time. It's cheap sexy stuff with some really badly written characters all over. There's some triggering material, as a 1980's fantasy movie was wont to do. But it sure had some outfits I'd like to draw sometime.

A Little Freelancing

Okay so a tiny bit of background. I was silly enough to buy Anthem. I actually did enjoy my time with it... despite really bad bugs and ui things making it HARDER to enjoy it than it should have been. But I enjoyed the thought of the heroic "Freelancers" being treated like real world Freelancers.

Materials Test (kinky)

It's been a fun few days trying to emulate materials. And this piece was just a fun challenge overall.

Anyway, this was just me experimenting with a different way to render. And I thought this was a good way to handle a more "matte" looking leather than the shiny latex stuff I usually draw. The effect is rather beautiful if a little more time consuming.

Mecha with Character

Nothing too much here, just inspired by some classic anime like Dominion Tank Police. I think I talked about the designs of Mega Man Legends in the last post. It would be nice to get back into a place where mecha has some real charisma. So when you see a tank, it's got some actual character to it rather than just big and imposing.

I think Anthem could use a little more of that, by the way.

PS1 Era Colette

So I was watching an LP of Mega Man Legends (I'd never actually played the game myself) and just realizing how fun the art style in that world is. I know some of the way that game was designed was based around the limitations of the hardware but it was really good about using clear and simple shapes to make really distinctive and fun robots.

I think Gunmetal Colette's design is a inner. People seem to really like it and it's a clear mix of sexy/adventurer/cyborg stuff that's a lot of fun to look at. I still don't really have a story but I am starting to get a feel for what I want to do.

I did like how the expressions came out. I should try to go for these more exaggerated expressions from time to time. I think the whole body language and faces in this sketch page work very well together, ears or no ears.

Let's Roll (bonus messy colette)

Just a really quick, little weird post right now before I get to work. We were watching the old 90's cartoon Mega Man and it's sometimes an awesome show but frequently a terrible show. And it's kinda amazing just how ludicrously sexist it was with Roll. At the same time, a lot of people (including myself) are fond of Roll from that show. It was suggested somewhere that I doodle Colette in that outfit... actually I think I suggested it to myself.

But she's quite popular on the twitter. I really like her look and I'm thinking about how to use her or what kinds of stories I can make with her.

Right now she's definitely a super hero of some kind. I was liking the gold trim and thought I could utilize that in her powers. So I'm thinking she can transform into gold or other metals. And I was thinking, what if she transforms into the noble metals? I wanted to name her Noble but right now there's a great character in the Catalyst comic...

Gally's Hands

Just sketching, did this a little while ago. I think I'm getting better the past few days, but I'm also getting to a point where my head is getting a little "high." Like I'm coming up with too many thoughts and it's nice to be active but it can be self destructive if not reigned in.

Well... whatever. I really liked the Battle Angel movie. I loved the attention to detail on Gally's hands though. They're really remarkable work.

Chocolette (sexy pinup)

Just a silly idea, ended up liking it though. I could go for some chocolates, that's for sure.

Technical note for artists, when it comes to coloring dark chocolate, the highlight color isn't likely going to be a "lighter brown" rather it shares a color with the light source. Dark chocolate is glossy.

Rendering

I'm still sick this past week, I'm sorry I'm not interacting as much as I could be. These were fun to work out though. Bloodborne has been a pretty good companion while sick, something about it feels very "literary." If that makes sense. It's a very good videogame, but it doesn't have a lot of text. The ambiguities in its story telling feel very artful and engaging. And I like the tragedy inherent in all the characters.

So I played a bunch of the Anthem demo this weekend and I gotta admit it ticks a lot of boxes for me. But what I really want is just someone to make Masamune Shirow's designs into a reality. It helped that there was a whole sexual aspect to his robot suits and I guess that might not be everyone's thing. It is mine though.

Color Theories

There isn't much to this except I was testing a couple things with layer modes in Clip Studio Paint. Back when I was in art school, I was taught the theory of how to do a painting over an underpainting. I never really mastered it then but I always thought it was a useful an interesting way to work. I'm less good at it digitally. But that didn't stop me from spending years trying to make this process work, and seeing if it could be a solid shortcut if I used Layer Modes.

From a certain perspective it's got the same amount of "lewdness" as a movie where a heroine in a swimsuit is captured by a squid. Though... this "swimsuit" is semi transparent. It's the Mayor of New Donk City from Mario Odyssey. That's a really wonderful game and if you get a chance, I think it's an easy recommendation. It's just full of charm from beginning to end. And Pauline is the center of one of the best video game moments in recent memory. I was just watching a video of it in a Lets Play series I like, so I wanted to sketch her.

Cleaning House A Little

I've updated the front page a bit! I'm going to update it a little more, pretty soon. What I want to add are a few more graphics to show the kinds of things you can find if you join the patreon.
