Lansius sat on the edge of his straw mattress bed, his back hunched and his gaze fixed on the dimly lit room. A half empty small jar of wine and an empty bucket were on the floor near his foot. The plan was to drink his sorrows away, but the taste of undiluted local wine was too horrid.
Outside, the last hour of sunlight peered through the open slit in the window. Lansius noticed the reddish-orange color and drew a heavy sigh.

The sun shone brightly that day, and the warm weather was a welcome change. The sky, visible through the forest canopies, was a brilliant shade of blue. It contrasted greatly with the reddish leaves of the late fall season.
