In this episode, a soldier has to attend a "travel brief" prior to going on leave.
The "travel brief" is a real thing. When a soldier is about to go on leave or pass and they intend to travel outside of Kosovo (as almost all of them do), they need to be told about potential problems and things to watch out for in the place they're going.

Something like this will probably be the last words I say. That or something like, "Does Mr. Wolf and his pack want to plaaaayyy? Who wants belly skritchies?" At least I will die mostly happy.
Hold on, don't accept a "hug" from this guy.
Here's someone that looks like he needs a ...

I suspect that Charlie Brown will regret a lot of his life choices over the years.
I actually really like Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang; in many ways they got me interested in cartooning as a youngster. But I also love to tweak their world a bit.
Oh, Charlie, why did you get into politics? Stop that right now!

Food is so central to the human experience... I recall that during my Iraq deployment, so many of my characters' interactions were set during meal times. It is frequently the only time we have to talk informally.

Lemony and sour, they're the doodles of the hour.
A very sour situation! Years from now, when the nerdy kid is a CEO, will he hire the big kid as a janitor? Maybe!
Another kind of "sour" situation. From an actual sign at the medical station in Camp Bondsteel.

Hey, I'm going to try to put together an artists group here at Camp Bondsteel in our MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) facility-- there's the possibility of putting together a group project I'm thinking of... so stay tuned! If this actually kicks off, I'll make sample to bring home and share with everyone here!

Juni talks on the phone to Joe; I used found images as the basis because I started this one earlier, before I gained access to the scanner at work. So it has a slightly artificial feel to it compared to my normal style but for awhile I thought this was going to be my only option.
Seeing people talking outside on the veranda of the Seahuts is pretty common.

Holidays at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo! Or, in this case, the city of Prishtina. For being a country that is 90% Muslim, they go all-out for... Christmas. Obviously this is the secular version of Christmas, with Santa, Trees, and lots and lots of lights.

Christianity exists here of course, although it is mostly Serbian Orthodox Christianity, which celebrates Christmas on January 7th. So this is pu...

See how I declined the temptation to draw briefs, or a person wearing briefs? I am so proud of myself.
Not everyone is thrilled. I suppose it is to be expected.
Some people are quite happy, though. They see briefings as an opportunity, for something. And stuff.

We look forward to Mail Days. Our Battalion runs mail call on Mondays. Wednesdays, and Fridays. I don't know if that is their choice, something that came down from higher, or if it is the way the post office here is running things. But three days a week we get our little displays of love and support from home.
Now this year, we're away from our loved ones and while we do have our Army Family™ here with us, it is not entirely the same. I work with great people and I enjoy their company...

Once again, I loaded pictures (pencil sketches) with the crappy scanner at work.
It wasn't until two days ago (after already loading the last batch of comic roughs) it occurred to me to look up the make & model of the scanner on the internet and find out how to change the settings. Oh, well. I scanned in a bunch of new doodles at a higher resolution so we'll see if it works out.
So th...

Wow, that happened fast, didn't it? The collapse of the 50+ year Assad regime in Syria upended decades of accepted political dogma. I even remember reading news reports that stated things like, "It is time to admit that Assad has won the Syrian civil war" and that it was time to accept that fact.
And let's face it, for a while, it looked like that was the case. It just goes to show how quickly change can happen once an unexpected tipping point is reached.
We don't know how this i...

Been working on some stuff, trying to keep busy. The last couple of comics I made were entirely digital, which is kind of unusual for me. I prefer working with paper sketches first and then moving on to scanned images, which I then proceed to detail.
In this case, I drew on paper and scanned the images in, and started working on them. I didn't notice the unusual line thickness since it h...

Didn't have anything up today. My sweet old dog passed on Wednesday. He was loved and spoiled and carried on even as he got weaker. The walks got shorter, his gait stiffer, and he was so tired. He wanted to be let go to so he could run again with his sister, Sadie. He had his dignity to the end.
He got a last meal fit for a dog of his stature; 100% organic grass-fed beef patty with Irish cave-aged cheddar and an Italian brioche bun. He rested his head on his mama's lap and she gently s...

So I have mentioned in the past that I am part of an online collaborative story that is essentially a giant Star Wars shared-universe fanfic. We started it 20 years ago and it has been going since, sometimes with periods of hiatus and sometimes "full steam ahead" when it is hard to keep up with events.
This Star Wars shared fanfic is called "Rebuilding of Empires" and it has its own internal canon. I could go into the details bu...

We have the "Devolution Group" at my day job. It's the group that is selected to keep showing up and maintaining minimum basic functions in the event of a long-term emergency. They are expected to "devolve" as we trim back higher functions to concentrate on keeping the lights on and little else.
Some of us have less impactful disaster preparedness plans.

Kosovo is foggy. Foggy and smoggy.
When I first got here, and almost every morning since then, the air has been thick with fog. Like thick, soupy fog that you almost have to chisel your way through.
Kosovo is shaped like a giant bowl, and wind typically comes in from over the Italian Alps, where it gets kind of cold, and then blows over the Adriatic Sea, where it picks up moisture, and then it blows inland, where it promptly gets stuck by the ring of mountains that form the bowl...

I am putting together some stuff for extended KFOR use-- above: I am working on a background piece that will be useful over and over again, the "seahut". Our buildings are called Seahuts, and there are endless rows of them here at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo. And, yes, they all pretty much look the same, so once I've drawn one seahut I can use it over and over again! It's like creating a set for a TV show, such as the typical family living room seen over and over again in iconic shows like "All ...
