Cabaret Timelapse

This one came about when I didn’t expect it - I was sketching and started to think about drawing a full piece, but I was sort of making it up as I went and didn’t fully work out the composition, so there is some improvisation going on here (I’ll let you in on a secret - my work is often much more improvisational than you’d think). Olya as Sally Bowles was obviously going to be the centerpiece but I couldn’t figure out what to do with Otto - since he’s a pretty stoic character the flamboyance of the Emcee didn’t really feel right so I abandoned that idea after sketching it out in the background. Ultimately I decided on putting him lurking in the background in the shadows behind the curtain. About halfway through the process I decided that Olya’s torso was annoyingly too long so I had to adjust that, and fix the chair accordingly.

A note on using the symmetry tool in Procreate (or any digital art program) - I often find it useful and time-saving to sketch using it, sometimes for faces or bodies (as in Olya’s wide-legged pose here) and also for chairs or other objects (like the footlights in front) but I always think that it should never be used for the final line art. I feel that it gives the piece a warmer, more authentic feel if you allow the natural variances by drawing over the symmetrical sketch without assistance. It takes longer but the end result is worth it.
