DISCOVERY s3e7 “Unification III” & s3e8 “The Sanctuary”

Matt and Andy watch the crew visit future Vulcans and Romulans for another Trek courtroom drama where they fulfill their First Duty to the truth -- of what Burnham's feeling!

Then it's back to Pandora where Book and his brother  face off with the most dreaded villains in the galaxy!  Which are the Emerald Chain, I guess?

Welcome to your Amoktober Discovery pod, Lieutenants!  Post your Disco-related comments/questions from these episodes here for consideration for next month’s Disco pod!  This one's topping three hours, because we really like to give you your money's worth of our complaining!

I’m going to try to put into words a theory I had with the first part of this season — Michael Burnham will recognise by the end of the season she’s a poor fit for Starfleet and ultimately choosing to leave. Why? I think judging by her actions over the previous 2 seasons have shown us how much she struggles working with the chain of command. From openly committing mutiny in the very first episode through to her almost immediate demotion from First Officer this season; Burnham struggles to work within the confines of Starfleet. Michael Burnham is constantly trying to circumvent rules and regulations to suit her goals. At the heart of it, she’s a fanatic. She wholeheartedly believes in the mission of Starfleet and The Federation, but her constant bending and breaking of rules in order to work outside of Starfleet felt like it was all building towards an exodus of sorts. To me, it felt like the writers could take Burnham in any number of directions. The most simple and elegant solution would have been for her to reform Section 31 with Geogiou and spin off into their own series. (Obviously this could never happen now as we will see in Terra Firma Parts 1 and 2) Another solution would have been for her to recognise the good her brother Spock did in his ambassadorial role, and for her to take up a similar role, perhaps as a roaming ambassador for the Federation. It was just with Burnham’s demotion from First Officer (again!) that it felt like the show was trying to say, “Look, Michael Burnham has her heart in the right place, she wants to defend the Federation, but she’s just not Starfleet officer material. She’s going to need a free hand to be able to rebuild the Federation.” Unfortunately, it feels like this theory begins to weaken the futher we get from Burnham’s disobedience and demotion, but it did solidify for me one thing — Michael Burnham isn’t Starfleet, and that’s fine. Let her be an ambassador, or a super spy for a super secret black ops organisation, or a plucky smuggler with an adorable cat. Michael Burnham doesn’t have to be Starfleet to make a difference. And maybe, finally, the crew of the USS Discovery will finally get some shore leave/R&R after 3 years of constantly saving the universe. Anyway, I’d be interested to hear what you guys think. Am I being overly critical of Burnham here or do you agree?

I'm also getting upset over the use of "galactic treaties" Goldsman and Kurtzman use to cover plot holes. You're telling me every race in the galaxy signed a treaty to stop producing synthetic life? What did that effort look like? How did you get all of the Federation's enemies to stop using time travel tech? It's so lazy.
