Proof that no one from the show watched the animated series, in an early episode (SPOILER) Spock travels back in time to prevent himself being killed by a monster in the Vulcan wilderness. Burnham does the same. Is this a Vulcan thing or is Sarek just careless? Am expecting a Trek Short about Sybok's trip to save his past self.

I still love Discovery. I know there are a million things that are wrong with it, and I agree with almost all of the complaints made about it. It is wildly melodramatic. The technology is wildly inconsistent, not only with the rest of the Trek, but also internally inconsistent, thinking about those drones right now. Most frustratingly, absolutely everything happens to and centers around Michael, which is both a wasted opportunity and also not consistent with the ensemble nature of Star Trek. I can see all of these things and still love it for a few reasons. 1. I don't want to underplay this one, because it's probably the most important. I am an incredibly easy audience to please. I am basically guaranteed to enjoy any show or movie where things explode and no one gets raped. That's genuinely all it takes for me to have a good time, but throw in a Bechdel pass and you'd have to work really hard to lose me as a fan. Yes, I even enjoyed Picard. 2. I trust everyone here not to be jerks about this one, so please don't let me down. As a woman of color, I love to see shows prominently featuring women of color. I know that TV shows with diverse casts have really been on the rise, and I am delighted. However, my previously expressed desire for the occasional explosion in all of my visual media means that I am not satisfied with Shonda Rhimes and Tyler Perry. I'm a science fiction fan, and I enjoy seeing women of color in my science fiction shows. It's more common than it was, but it's always a special treat for me when it happens. And yes, when I had roommates, they were sometimes told to shut up because I was watching "Black Lady Star Trek". Similar occurrence when the newest season Doctor Who was on. 3. It's beautiful to look at. Effects, makeup, people. It's a really beautiful show. 4. I sort of enjoy being shown people living in this better future who aren't necessarily all that good at being good. We've seen other captains and crews struggle with how to uphold the ideals of the federation when the circumstances are complicated and difficult. This show gives us people trying to uphold those ideals when their own instincts are different. The idea that the Federation was built and maintained by a society full of people who are trying to build a better world in spite of themselves, and fuck it up, and have to fix it, is really appealing to me. Of course Picard can make the right choices. He objectively has the appropriate instincts and morals for this better future, and I love watching him be excellent. I also like seeing this show where people are all messed up and confused by instincts and emotions that are incompatible with the ideals of the federation. It makes it feel more realistic to me. We don't have to wait for better people, we just have to build a better society and then Picards can be born into it. 5. Last, but definitely not least. I love watching anything where a woman over 40 kicks ass. (Anyone else see Old Guard?) I would definitely prefer the non-genocidal Georgiou, but I'm still glad they kept this one on the show because I like watching Michelle Yeoh hit people.
