(typing this before I finished watching your review, btw, just because it interested me) I just quickly skimmed through the episode, because I had no recollection of Stanley being mentally handicapped. There still seem to be some lines that indicate it, but the actor doesn't seem to play it that way, and I'm curious if it was a production decision or an acting one.
I generally remember understanding it purely as a class issue. Stanley was tired of having to work harder than his employers while deferring to them, and wanted to experience power.
To me the fascinating thing about this is that it's an idea that's been popularized in the past few years in works like Lovecraft Country and The Ballad of Black Tom. Where Lovecraft's Cosmic Horror genre assumed that the lower classes were feeble-minded and thus susceptible to the temptation of otherworldly forces, the modern view seems to be that those forces look pretty damned appealing when you have nothing to lose anyway.
...anyway, ON WITH THE REVIEW!
