I've been debating how this show should have ended, and I think your review finally gave me an idea. I realize now that coming down on either side of the "God is evil" theological debate would have been unsatisfying, it would need to be ambiguous. It might be a cop-out, but I think there's only one way to maintain that ambiguity: Zeke never left Hell, and the whole show has been his "parole hearing." It ends with him either being allowed to reincarnate or entering Purgatory to work his way towards heaven. Zeke is off the hook, Hell is not eternal, but whether any of this is justified is never answered and left to the viewer.
