Dead Meat Patreon Update (PLEASE READ)
Added 2019-12-29 23:52:00 +0000 UTCHi patrons! Now that I've posted all of December's rewards (besides the early release of Society, which will probably get posted tomorrow), I wanted to let you all know of some Dead Meat developments.
As you know, Society will be released on Tuesday - New Year's Eve. And as you may or may not know, the next Kill Count after that won't be coming out until Friday January, 31st.
On Friday January 3rd I'll be releasing an Announcement video detailing this schedule change, but I wanted to let you all know ahead of time since you're patrons. Please don't post this information publicly, I'd rather have people find out from a video released on my channel so they can learn all the details firsthand.
Anyway, the schedule change is thus: For the first few months of 2020, there will only be one Kill Count released each month. Trust me, I hate doing this - I love making Kill Counts and, to be honest, I'm worried about what this lighter release schedule is going to do to my channel's placement in the YouTube algorithm.
But the fact of the matter is that I need a break, for a number of reasons. First off, I want to avoid burnout - like I said, I love making Kill Counts and I want to keep loving that. The nonstop work they require can feel constricting sometimes and I want to relieve some of that pressure so I don't end up resenting the series.
Also, you know, I'm planning a wedding. That's gonna take up some time. I'm also finally getting around to doing some big BUSINESS (tm) stuff, like establishing Dead Meat as an actual, legally-recognized business. That's also going to take up some time.
And finally, with weekly Kill Counts, even though I have Bry and Zoran helping me, they pretty much take up all of my effort and energy. I would like to give myself a break from that so I can explore other creative outlets - for the channel, stuff like Cut Comparisons, Ranking Lists, possibly covering TV series somehow, and entirely new series altogether. But also non-channel stuff. I want to get back into improv, possibly audition for acting roles, and maybe even try my hand at writing something long-form like a book or a screenplay. I'm not entirely sure yet, but I know I need more time to myself to figure it all out, and there's no way to have that time with weekly Kill Count releases.
So, Kill Counts will come out on the Final Friday of the Month for at least the first quarter of 2020. That means January, February, and March - and maybe even into April. I'll probably be back to weekly releases come May, and definitely during the summer, since that's when viewership goes up thanks to summer vacation.
As for the other weeks of these months, I initially planned to just not release anything, but I've been told that would be a death sentence for the channel in regards to the algorithm. So, in tribute to the Almighty Algorithm, I'll probably be releasing other videos that don't take as much time for me to make. Fair warning: That means a lot of Supercuts. Please don't hate on them. But hopefully that will also give me the opportunity to do stuff like another PO Box video, another Q&A video, and maybe even the "How Kill Counts Get Made" video that I've been wanting to do for forever.
AS FAR AS PATREON GOES: I am still going to keep up with Patreon rewards, meaning the commentary tracks, the livestreams, and the reviews. HOWEVER, please feel free to pause or cancel your contribution during these months, or altogether. As this year draws to a close, it's impossible for me to ignore how absolutely lucky and privileged I am to be in this position. There is nothing I could reasonably complain about in my life, especially when it comes to finances. I cannot stress this enough: Please don't feel obligated or guilted into supporting me on Patreon just because you enjoy my videos. They are, indeed, a LOT of work to make - but right now, I am more than fairly compensated by ad revenue for all that work. This Patreon could drop to zero right now and the channel would be okay. The last thing I want is for someone struggling financially to contribute some of their income to me. I don't need it more than you, I promise.
To be honest, I've even considered scrapping the Patreon altogether, but after thinking about it, I've decided to keep it for this reason: The channel has obviously gotten too big for me to maintain a more personal relationship with all of my fans. The Patreon is a chance for you to become a specialized subset of the Dead Meat audience that I can give more attention to. I hope that doesn't sound crass or greedy, it's just a realistic solution to wanting to have more personal relationships with fans when the size of the channel makes that impossible at large.
Anyway, this was all typed off the cuff and hopefully it all makes sense to you. Like I said, I'll have a video explaining this all to the public on Friday 1/3, but in the meantime, please don't post this information anywhere.
Thank you so much for your support and love. It means a lot to me and Chelsea (and Lucy!). We hope you have a great New Year and an excellent 2020.

Well I for one will not be canceling or suspending my Patreon support. I LOVE this channel and I have watched it religiously for so long that for me to be a recent Patreon supporter I feel like I owe you back time! LOL! Enjoy life and your fiance' and your furry children, I'm not going anywhere and I hope nobody else does either! Be blessed! Cheers!

2020-01-09 12:07:40 +0000 UTCYou're good people man and a helluva content creator. I'm excited for you, and I'm excited to see what you come up with next!

2020-01-03 05:57:54 +0000 UTCYeah, I’m gonna have to scale back my commitment for a bit, but I’ll always support your channel and content, even if you and Chelsea are doing well financially. And don’t worry about Wait Until Dark loooool I know you’ll get around to it someday! I’m frankly afraid I’ve overhyped it at this point.
Brendan
2020-01-03 01:00:53 +0000 UTCPlease don’t scrap the Patreon James! There’s 0% guilt following here. We love and support you. Take all the time you need and create a schedule that works for you
Sophie Brown
2020-01-03 00:13:06 +0000 UTCYou guys work harder then any YouTubers I know. You take all the time you need to do what you gotta do. I love you guys and I’d hate to see you get burned out and loose your passion for your work. 😁😁
Lance Stein
2020-01-02 00:51:27 +0000 UTCTake all the time you need, James! I’m planning my own wedding and I totally get how bonkers it can be! Your videos always make me feel better when I’m sad and missing my fiancé (he’s been deployed for six months 😰) and your hilarious commentary makes me laugh til my sides hurt! I also quote your jokes almost all the time! Keep up the amazing work and be sure to take care of your self! Thanks for making horror less terrifying for us! <3
Ness Valdansé
2020-01-01 17:16:09 +0000 UTCI am also planning a wedding and yeah, you need a break. It takes up some time. I'm a new patreon member and have no problem binging the explicit releases in the meantime. The last thing your fans want is for you to get burnt out and everyone needs some time off work. Congrats to you and Chelsea!
Brittany Lusk
2020-01-01 08:10:16 +0000 UTCAs someone with severe anxiety, I understand how stressful work deadlines can be, and having to do something as time consuming as planning a wedding (I've been told that it's time consuming, but I'm not married, so I don't know firsthand) on top of that, it's understandable to take some time off. None of us Patreon supporters feel obligated to support you, because we know you have plenty of money. We just do it because we appreciate your work and want to make sure that you still get paid when Youtube age restricts your videos. Keep up (just slightly less) the amazing work, and please start posting sponsored but still explicit Kill Counts to Patreon, just so we have easy access to them.
Rebecca Kirshenbaum
2020-01-01 02:33:18 +0000 UTCI’m sad but I completely understand I listen to the kill counts every day at work even though I have already seen them all. I love you guys

2020-01-01 02:11:51 +0000 UTCAs a relative newcomer to the channel I have been kind of spoiled as I had so much to go through over the last few months. I appreciate that there must be a crazy amount of work that goes into making these so it’s understandable you might need some time to yourself now and then. While I will miss the weekly episodes I am sure the monthly videos will be just as great.
2019-12-31 22:17:53 +0000 UTCIt’ll be sad not having as much from you guys to watch but it’ll be happy knowing you are getting much deserved time off to explore other avenues and have a break. Much love going into the new year!!!!!!

2019-12-31 17:54:28 +0000 UTCTake ur time Mr. Janisse, I will forever be indebted to you; you are proof to my parents that you can thoroughly enjoy and love horror w/o being a wackadoodle 👩🏽💻😊

2019-12-31 15:03:10 +0000 UTCAw, dang. Can’t say I won’t miss the weekly Kill Counts, but I’m glad you’re taking the time you need.

2019-12-31 13:01:50 +0000 UTCI originally started watching you on YouTube and then joined Patreon because of the obsession with anything horror-related I’ve had all my life, but you really stand out from all the other YouTubers not only because of how incredibly hard you work, your talent, intelligence, humor, etc., but mostly because how genuine, caring, and just all-around amazing you are. As corny as this may sound, you’re really an inspiration to work harder and to be a better person. You and Chelsea are so sweet and deserve all the happiness in the world. Hope you both have a blast planning your wedding.

2019-12-31 03:45:34 +0000 UTCAlthough this isn't the happiest news, I would never expect you to be a "one trick pony", so some time to go further into other creative ventures is wonderful. Besides, this is meant to be an escape and artistic outlet...no need to burn the candle at both ends and lose that magic. Congrats! We're behind you.

2019-12-31 01:08:04 +0000 UTCNo worries James! Thanks for the update and hope that all of your 2020 endeavors go well.

2019-12-30 13:57:19 +0000 UTCReally, the video per week schedule has already been pretty astounding, while no two creators are the same, plenty I follow talk about it being hard work to have a video out monthly. The 3 years of constant, uninterrupted killcounts (and bonus killcounts) is some astounding stuff that honestly has more than earned you a break while you focus on things like *getting married*

2019-12-30 12:43:59 +0000 UTCWhatever you need, James! Will remain a Patron just because of my love for the channel and you guys! Xx

2019-12-30 01:40:15 +0000 UTCI often think about how ungodly it must be to write those scripts- in fact, I thought it again last video. I've never been a creator, but scripted content is work. Editing is work. If you've worked behind the scenes on anything, you know how lugubrious the creative process is. Especially at the lengths you run. Whatever is best for you is best for your channel. Cheers, dude!

2019-12-30 00:23:01 +0000 UTCI've been watching your Kill Count videos for the last couple of years. And I'm happy to say my 12 year old son has fallen in love with horror movies thanks to Kill Count! We watch your videos together every week and it makes me so happy. We even got him a Dead Meat hoodie from the merch store for Christmas, which he'll be proudly be wearing when he goes back to school after vacation (I hope I don't get a call from the school about it, lol). All this to say I'm going to keep supporting you on Patreon and I'll look forward to your videos on the last Friday of every month and I'll keep watching your old videos in the mean time and I'll keep listening to the podcast. Thank you for everything you do, James A. Janisse! =D
Jason Andreoni
2019-12-30 00:19:02 +0000 UTCIf this helps you stay sane, and to explore new creative outlets, then I'm all for it. The only concern I have is that darn algorithm, because it's going to make it harder to know when you do put stuff out. You might want to put a mention in your announcement reminding people to RING THAT BELL to ensure that they get the notifications, regardless of the algorithm. But overall, I'm glad you're taking care of yourself. Sure, we love more and more Dead Meat content, we can't get enough, but in the long run this is better for all of us, because we know the quality will be great, and who knows, maybe you'll find inspiration and something even better will come out of it (What?! Better than Kill Count? That's Madness!!).

2019-12-30 00:11:19 +0000 UTCI remember jumping in to support the patreon as soon as it started so we could help you do YouTube full time. Hearing that now YouTube is enough to support you is amazing. This thing I first thought of as a side project to practical folks has really been fascinating to watch the growth of. Your work ethic has always seemed very intense, so I think with the new year starting it is a great time to take a break. I can't wait to see some of the other projects you are thinking of making. Keep up the great work James!
Nathan Smith
2019-12-30 00:10:38 +0000 UTCOf course I am a little bummed to not see these every week, but your hard work deserves more than some time off. From a fellow Michigander, hope you guys enjoy yourself! so excited to hear about all you guys get up to with this time!

2019-12-30 00:08:24 +0000 UTCIt sucks that there won’t be a Kill Count every week but it’s completely understandable. You’ve busted your ass and you deserve the break James. Will still support y’all no matter what!

2019-12-30 00:06:19 +0000 UTCHi James, long time viewer, several month Patron and first time commentor (Always wanted to do that schtick). Just wanted to first thank you for all you do for your fans and viewers, and especially us, your Patrons. James, your health and well-being shouldn't have to take a backseat to appeasing the YouTube algorithm. Plus, as someone who has been trying to plan their own wedding for a while, I know how much that can put on you. You and Chelsea deserve to have an amazing wedding, so if it means a little less content while you plan for your future, I for one am fine with that. I am probably not the first person (nor will I be the last) to say this, but it bares saying: You deserve the break, and I, like most of us here, will be waiting for each episode of KC even more fervently now. Thank you for all you do and create, and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us this year.
Alex Worden
2019-12-30 00:05:49 +0000 UTCTake your time we don't want you to get burned out. Focus on your wedding. You put out so much content that I'm pretty sure people will re watch.

You deserve to take as long a break as you want, hope you have a fantastic New Year and you enjoy the break, everyone involved in Dead Meat deserve it for the fantastic work you do for all us fans!
