They are previous and existent nation states that were the victims of neat red lines drawn around natural resources by French and British colonial agreements (both of which were promised statehood). Kurdistan is essentially independent as it operates with an incredibly high level of autonomy within Iraq alongside its traditional ethnic lines, with parts of the constitution of Iraq which mandate a Kurd being in specific roles to avoid a complete breakdown of Iraq as a nation. It is the Syrian and Turkish sides that are vying for independence
