Doomscroll 15: Quinn Slobodian

My guest is Quinn Slobodian, a professor of international history at Boston University. He is the author of "Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism". Neoliberalism is the most misused word in today's political discourse. In this episode we discuss the origins of the ideological movement. What is neoliberalism? When did it begin? How did it transform global politics?

Superb!!!!! Outstanding!!! Heard Slobodian on Dem Now! And noted his brilliant analysis and articulateness. I heard Citarella on TrueAnon and thought he was great too! So the two of you together were perfect. It requires a second listening at least! In addition to the theory of the sadistic libido of the Right wing as explanation of its violent repudiation of race and gender, another aspect of the Right’s need to repress social and cultural ‘diversity’ speaks to what Quinn brought up about the 21st C appeal to Monarch-CEO…The longer continuity of a monarch which can produce a stability mainly in the cultural sphere, but only if there is overall a homogeneity of social values, i.e., tradition, so the monarch can be generous towards all its people ( including Jews in Habsburg empire). But I think the race gender plurality and multiculturalism of 21C presents a bigger problem: cultural heterogeneity. Thus, the libidinal sadism of New Right directs its energy to making an enemy of these groups, not universalizing them under magnanimous monarchs, but eliminating and exiling the excess of difference at this level, and gives the base its red meat in a psychological economy, for cathartic release and distraction, from other contradictions in financial economy.
