Episode 305: The Years in Review Revue (2010)

Our Years In Review Revue series for 2020 was derailed somewhat (well, OK, a lot) by the pandemic, but I'm happy to have put a bow on it before we get halfway through the year. Chris Sims and Ben Elgin and I convene virtually for the first time ever, so this is both a series wrap-up and a bit of a learning process for future installments. It's also the last time the Years in Review Revue will take this form; we're getting to a point in game history where the latter years have too damn many games to talk about, so please look forward to a completely remixed format in 2021. In the meantime, please enjoy this look back at a year that doesn't seem like it could possibly have quite so long ago.

Description: The Retronauts East crew reunites (virtually) to complete their journey through the Years in Review Revue, wrapping up with a look at 2010—a year overflowing with greatness! Jeremy Parish, Chris Sims, and Ben Elgin buckle beneath its weight. Art by Amanda Pruitt.

Comments

Terry Cavanagh: I think the reason it came up so often is it’s so much fun to try and pronounce it. I call it “V.” I called it “V” during development, but I encourage any sort of funny pronunciation so V-V-V-V-V-V is fine, as is vuh-vuh-vuh or trying to guess how many V’s are in it. Some people call it “Six V’s,” which is probably easiest.

Would you guys consider labeling the games talked about or mentioned in an episode? I find it distracting to have to stop to look up a game mentioned. If there were show notes, it wouldn’t break my enjoyment flow. Keep up the good work!

Glad there were a couple quick comments on Strange Journey, as it gets overlooked often. Hopefully one day down the line we can get a full episode on it or about the overall resurgence of SMT in the late 00's, games on portable systems in the West, etc.

Sims ranting about Lords of Shadow is giving me nostalgia because I'm pretty sure the first ep of War Rocket Ajax I ever listened to included him complaining about that game.

You hit the 2010 and all of the sudden I feel like I stopped paying attention to video games in 2010.
