Episode 574: Pitfall! (The David Crane Years)

Jeremy: Greetings from myself and Stuart and Kevin and Pitfall Harry. Or is that "Pitfall! Harry"? I'm never sure how to parse these things. But I am positive that I will never be able to record a podcast episode that entirely covers the intended roster of content we lay out in advance. This one should have been easy! There are only, what, like half a dozen Pitfall! games? And yet, here we are. This episode only covers Pitfall! and its first sequel, Pitfall II: Lost Caverns. And a sort of spiritual kindred game. That's not even half of the series. Yes, there's nothing for it but to record a follow-up episode....

But that's OK. Pitfall! was kind of a big deal. It deserves the spotlight.

We had Pitfall II when I was a kid. Loved playing that game on our Atari 7800.

It's weird - I never considered Pitfall to be a game to complete - just a score rush, just get as many points as you can in 20 minutes. But yes there's a consistent map. https://shorturl.at/kSV01 - Yeah there's a practical maximum of collecting everything. My pitfall origin story was asking for a Nintendo for christmas and getting a 2600 along with a collection of games from some neighbor who dropped their 2600 collection of loose carts HARD when the NES came along. So I got range of primitive games like Circus Atari and Combat all the way to Pitfall I and II. Starting up pitfall II for the first time was a shock - 'why don't other 2600 games have a soundtrack?'. (Never knew what Quickclaw was doing with his vibrating tail and legs though.) I hadn't known that there was a Pitfall cartoon that II was based after until years later when I came across a Pitfall coloring book. I really hate Super Pitfall for falling into the typical early Famicom design flaws - lots of characters with flat colors, no backgrounds, and music that sounds like a tinny electronic piano with no percussion - even Pitfall II sounds a lot better. Anyway - check out "Super Pitfall 30th anniversary edition" - a rom hack that cleans up a lot of the bugs and offers modern NES homebrew graphical improvements and a remixed soundtrack. too. https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3060/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIaH3oDjuVg
