Episode 515: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Chapter 1
Added 2023-02-13 12:00:05 +0000 UTC
Ah, it never fails. You put together a single, compact outline about a topic in order to create a single, compact episode about said topic. Then you call in a bunch of people who are very passionate about that topic and HEY! Suddenly everything spirals out of control and you're looking down the barrel of a multi-part discussion.
Look, you should be used to this routine by now. It's just kind of how Retronauts works. If you're not into barely contained chaos in the name of talking about retrogaming, what are you even doing here?
In this case, we wanted to talk about JoJo's Bizarre Adventure—the manga, the anime, the games, and the series' gaming inspirations and influences on games. Well, we covered some of that, including plenty of talk about how JoJo reflects gaming trends and shaped them in turn... but we didn't quite make it to the actual games based on the franchise. Well, that's for next time.
Join myself, Diamond, VoidBurger, and Chris Person as we unravel the bizarreness of JoJo's adventures (all the JoJos!) and try to tread somewhat lightly around story spoilers.
Please note that while you can't see it in this audio format, we are all constantly posing in cool ways and wearing amazing clothes throughout the podcast.

I love JoJo but what I love even more about this episode is the podcasting itself. The transitions between people speaking are flawless, it doesn’t feel like anyone is interrupting another and people wait for the other to finish speaking for them to add their input. So this is what true professional podcast looks like, great quality stuff right there. Congrats

I bought the Dreamcast game back in the day simply because it was a fighting game. I've been meaning to play it again since watching the anime. The other games are fun, but All-Star Battle R is easily the best of the bunch. The mechanics are very unique and it looks amazing. Up there with Dragon Ball FighterZ as one of the best anime fighters.
Despite this episode being a fun listen, I can imagine anyone unfamiliar with Jojo thinking that you recorded after taking hallucinogens.

Thanks, all — this was a really fun and enjoyable episode! I also still kind of don’t understand what JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is. :)

Intriguing! The album was definitely released in Japan, but I couldn't find any implicit connections. Most people say "JoJo" came from a line in "Get Back" by The Beatles, but no one points to where the "Joestar" name came from.

Excellent episode! Just familiar with the name, I haven’t ever watched or read before, but will now.
Serendipitously, I came across this very obscure 70s garage rock band called “Rob Jo Star Band” today. Given the author’s love of 70s rock, could this be where the Joestar family’s name came from? I can’t see anywhere online where this connection has been made before…

One of the more notable "references" except it's so large it doesn't seem like a reference anymore isn't just that Persona 4 is almost exactly the same as Part 4, but Part 4 itself has almost exactly the same plot as Twin Peaks.

"Suddenly everything spirals out of control and you're looking down the barrel of a multi-part discussion" like I wasn't hoping to have a multi-part discussion from minute one
