This Month In Retronauts: October 2024 edition

Hello Retronauts fans, Diamond Feit here. I hope you love baseball and Halloween because both are upon us and come up during the course of this, our latest community podcast! Stuart Gipp and I discuss what we've been playing (that includes horror games), read your feedback, and we've got a brand-new question for you to answer for the next episode! I didn't even take this one from Bluesky, I thought it up myself.

Specific items mentioned in this episode include:

they certainly managed to win more games against the Dodgers this year!

Kudos to Stu for choosing the superior NY baseball team, the NY Mets. They’re my favorite squadron!

QotM - I’m tempted to lean into the unintentional humor of bad dubs and and awkward translations like the original Resident Evil, Deep Fear, and D and D2 (Jill sandwich, anyone?), but I think my actual choice is only technically horror. I choose Blue Stinger, which is survival horror, a Christmas game, and which hams up the genre by actually being skillful at both embodying and lampooning the foibles of the genre. It decided survival horror should be camp first and horror third or fourth and is more fun than it should be as a result.

QotM: Eternal Darkness. Specifically the insanity effects that break the 4th wall and mess with you as the player. Fake volume control graphics, telling you your controller is unplugged, and quite possibly my favorite...the game glitching out and giving you a blue screen of death. If anyone thinks this a poor choice, I will defend myself by saying it's the only horror game I've ever really played.

QotM: I have a hard time with horror games, and the instances where I've been able to power through them with Silent Hill 2, Eternal Darkness and Bloodborne didn't exactly have a lot of laughs. So my basic pick for funny horror is the original Resident Evil. Sure, the infamy of its stilted line delivery is overplayed, and doesn't actually impact the game's tension or scares. But Barry's "WHAT IS IT?" is a line that forever occupies my brain, and for months after watching my brother play for the first time, we were still quoting "Hope this isn't Chris's blood!" to each other.

the high temperatures this week continue to be in the mid-20s Celcius, totally absurd for Halloween

Diamond Feit

Answering the QotM: For horror games that are intentionally TRYING to be funny, I'm going to say Left 4 Dead, courtesy of its excellent character dynamics and knowing nods to the genre from Valve's stellar writers... but that's the boring answer. For me and my friends, the funniest horror game of all time was the 2008 version of Alone in the Dark - not because it wanted to be amusing, but because of a ridiculously broken car chase sequence early on. At first nobody would believe me when I mentioned just HOW dreadful it was, so I started a new save game, quickly played up to that point and then handed over the reins. Our group sat around for an entire evening taking it in turns to wrestle with the awful driving physics, sticky scenery, and extreme levels of jank that could end your attempt in one bug-ridden second. That night saw us reduced, one by one, to howls of screamed frustration while everyone else was in stitches, laughing uproariously at our rage. I was genuinely scared, sure, but my fear was mostly that a controller was going to end up embedded in my shiny new HDTV.

Great episode as always. QotM: not a really scary game necessarily but Luigi's Mansion is pprobably the funniest horror game. All the comedy pratfalls with Luigi and environmental elements that comedic moments made it a good time.

RE: Is Super Metroid a horror game? Reminds me, an artist I follow has done a couple of horror-themed hip hop albums. On one of the songs they sample the lower Brinstar music, so maybe? "Hungry City" by Godforbid.

I just got back from Japan yesterday (Oct 26th). It’s still hot! Like, not melting tires hot, but I was genuinely surprised. We planned our trip in October to avoid the heat. It certainly wasn’t unbearable or anything, but we were surprised at how warm it still was. Dang, the trains get hot the lower you go! It was my first trip to Tokyo and Kyoto and it was amazing. Can’t wait to go back. The energy of Tokyo was amazing. Love these monthly shows! I think to two of you are awesome together.

Haha well that’s a horse of a different color. Go Yanks

True story: I was editing this during game one so I was all hyped by Stanton’s HR. Then the game ended and I stuck to my guns.

Diamond Feit

I saw that and guessed Freddie Freeman grand slam (Yankees fan)

Craig

My wife's favorite game of all-time is the original Silent Hill 2 which she considers a masterpiece so she was very against the idea of a remake from the start. However the good reviews for the remake have made her reconsider her pledge not to play it. My daughter had a Summer of Silent Hill where she played 1, 2, and 3 for the first time. Her favorite was 2 for the story and 3 for the gameplay with the additional bonus that Heather the protagonist of 3, is 17, the same age as her. She had started on a Fall of Fatal Frame but was distracted from that this weekend when I suggested she try the Resident Evil series, so she's playing the remake of 1 right now on an original GameCube and CRT.

Seconded on the S3K episodes. The streets demand to know

Thank you for time stamping the World Series game 1 audio. I can guess what it is and I will be absolutely skipping that to avoid further mental anguish.

Whenever [This Month In Retronauts] rolls around, it's my monthly reminder that I forgot to comment on recent episodes! 🤦 So: 1) You're all great, and I always enjoy the Stuart/Diamond dynamic. 😁 2) The Terminator episode was great, and thanks for reminding me what a banger soundtrack that first film has! 3) I really appreciated on the Donald Duck episode a while back, when you mentioned which version of each game was the best one to play. And a question -- any hints on when we might get to hear the epic finale of the Sonic 3 & Knuckles mini-series? (Or maxi-series, depending on perspective) 🤞😁🤞

Giles Armstrong

Nice. We get to hear about Stu's take on Decap Attack
