CAN I GET YOUR FEEDBACK?

It's time for me to get planning on the next on line concert. For those of you who have seen any of these online concerts, can I get your opinion on two things?

1. What's your favorite part of these shows?

2. What show theme would be fun for the next show?

3. What's something you'd like to see change for the future?

For example, it was recently brought to my attention that certain light were glaring, so I've changed the angle of those lights to make it better.

What other kind of changes would you like to see?

I also love the new high quality video downloads without the streaming stutters etc. I am in the uk - so tend to just buy the downloads.

I like your concerts. Your band is very professional. Your steampunk songs are the best. Maybe do another concert just of songs from a particular album like you did with "End of Days." And more steampunk costumes.

This is a pet peeve of mine that sometimes applies to the Abney Park concerts... Do a sound check! More specifically, make sure the mics that people are using are balanced so that the audience can hear them (I sometimes really have to strain to hear what Carey says). Which then makes me wonder if I hearing all the music - although I'm reasonably certain the instruments are pretty well balanced. Okay, rant over. Cheers.

Ive liked every online show that youve put on, im a UK fan so seeing Abney Park live would be a very expensive and time consuming, so the online shows are ideal for me. Keep doing what youre doing, it seems to be working. As for future shows, what about a show where all songs are chosen by all 5 band members, it would be interesting to see which band members like which songs, maybe even a cover version or two.

I love the old music most, in part because I discovered you when Ancient World came out. I know all the lyrics, including the ones you have forgotten. More to come. I have to remember how to line return without entering the comment.

Definitely would love to see more shows like the end of days album play through you did with Jodie. Love the sound of your voices together. My favourite older album is “circus at the end of the world”. That would be awesome.

Thanks for the feedback, that makes a lot of sense! For the record, we are taking absolutely all of everybody's feedback 100% seriously.

1. I really like the backstories and related stories that sometimes get told before a song. How did this come about? What interesting relationship do the band members have to the song? Etc. 2. I wouldn't mind a "greatest hits" tour du catalog. Or something that paired up an old tune with a new one that complements it somehow. 3. I could always go for less flashing lights, and more consistent audio.

I've seen all of your streaming shows since Quarantine 1, including all the Afterparties. Had a blast watching all of them. Couple of things though, please please don't end on a cover song. It's always a let-down. And it seems the Afterparty has become more scripted, less seemingly spontaneous requests from the audience. And yes More Jody! Thank you for doing these. I'm on the East Coast and would never be able to get out there for a live gig. Keep doing what you do!

Out of curiosity, we have been playing in person shows every year since about 2021, after lock down lifted. Did you go to any of them? Or are you just saying, "Please play Southern California more"?

Abney Park

It goes like this: in the early days you are talking about, we all had day jobs, and lost money traveling to those shows, playing for Pennies. Then when album sales were high, playing for Pennies was worth it, because everybody bought CDs. Now people stream instead of buying, so we make no money making albums. Then Covid knocked out 90's of the events and clubs we played. The streaming shows are the only way we are surviving. And it's not like we are getting rich, we are just barely keeping up. Sure, I'd rather be touring and in front of concerts for every show, but then I'd loose my house. It's not "sell out". It's survival. Barely. I do have it in mind to try to play more in-person shows in 2025, but don't knock on the streaming ones, it's the only reason we are still a band.

Agreed. "The void" is the hardest to overcome.

Robert Brown

Okay, I'll get people to use mics more between songs...including myself!

I love the online concerts. I would not be able to follow you otherwise. Drinks are a lot cheaper as well. I'm glad you are fixing the flashing lights that washed out the other band members during the last few shows. Themes are great, Western, Space, End of civilization. Getting more banter from the other band members would be nice. Keep having them and I'll keep showing up. I really enjoy the VIP afterparty, but it's gonna be harder to swing that nut now that I'm going into partial retirement.

Sam

I love the banter and stories between songs, and when you play a surprise cover or deep track. My only complaint would be when you're talking, I can barely hear you so I have to turn the volume way up, then when the next song starts, it's deafening.

Wayne Maxwell

While the concerts are very fun, and the convenience of being able to attend shows in your own living room in pajamas is undeniably great, the effect that the complete lack of crowd feedback has on you and the band is huge. Sometimes it feels like you're playing for a Void. I'm not sure what the solution is, beyond all of us wearing VR headsets. I feel that this is the next major obstacle to overcome. Also: more Jody please.

John Connelly

I enjoy the selection of songs and the banter between songs. A fun theme might be one that mixed in some of your takes on old classic songs (like the Technoshanties or the New Nostalgics) alongside some of your new stuff that feels influenced by the classics, maybe even with some discussion about what you really love about those classic songs. I've enjoyed the concerts I've been able to make and don't really have any recommendations for a change, unless you were willing to do a somewhat longer set or take a break and do a couple of sets -- they always seem to finish way too fast, but partly that's because I'm really enjoying the music.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE the online concerts. I’ve been with Abney for decades well before all the line up changes. I remember my first time at “The Edison” in LA. There was always a palatable electricity in those live shows that has disappeared with the “online” concerts. I’ve loved the music so much I’ve dealt with that lack of “buzz” with a live audience. It’s just leaves me with an empty feeling. I get so pumped with anticipation of the concerts, then leave with buyers remorse. There is no audience to feed off of, and be a part of the experience. It’s like a teacher just giving you facts to digest without being able to taste the meal. AP was so innovative and creative, now there is more of a “sellout” vibe! Like we should be happy with the table scraps we are given and we should be happy with what we are given and keep our mouths shut. AP was so much better than that but now instead of being individualistic and out of the norm, AP has become the “fishsticks” of music faire I feel like I’m in an unhealthy codependent relationship. I feel I helped build the band by being there in the beginning, at the tiny venues supporting emotionally as well as financially and now I feel I’ve been kicked to the curb, for the easier, financially safer business plan. AP has gone from Airship Pirates to Airship CPA’s So in short, to make things better go on the road, revitalize go back to your roots and gain that Vitality back to the group or forever be damned to the dustbin of sellout corporate Vegas house bands. Just Saying. You asked!
