Honest Feedback and Criticism
Added 2021-05-28 20:52:59 +0000 UTCHi Patreons!
As some of you might have noticed, over the past year Mustard views have been declining. Each video I release seems to do worse than the last. The An-225, Inflatoplane and SCMalgev were total flops.
I'd love to understand why, but being so close to the content it's probably hard for me to see what you guys might find obvious It the content format getting stale? Is it the wrong mix of topics or if there is something else going on? Are other channels doing things better?
If you feel like sharing your thoughts and criticisms, I would be truly grateful :)
Thanks,
Gabe

That would be awesome, it dovetails nicely after the comet. Also the story where the test pilot does a barrel roll in front of IATA leadership to impress them
2021-06-21 01:26:58 +0000 UTCI love airliners too (obviously). It's definitely time I did another one. The 707 is one I've been thinking about doing as it's really the plane that set the basic groundwork for airliners to follow.

2021-06-21 00:40:29 +0000 UTCI've always liked all your videos. What brought me to Mustard in the first place were the videos on the classic airliners, especially the L1011 and the DC-10. Videos abound about the other aircraft, but the your video collection seems like its missing holes when it comes to the 707, 727, 737. Even the 757 and 330/340 story would be great continuations of the original story lines.
2021-06-20 23:09:17 +0000 UTCBecause I can't add them myself, I can't really pick the best timing for each subtitle to appear. So I tried to translate my Chinese subtitles as close in meaning to your English one as possible so it's easier for you to add them yourself because they both share the same timing. You should view it in google docs so it's easier to see which ones are bolded.

2021-06-18 13:51:20 +0000 UTCHey, Mustard. So as you said, viewers can't add their subtitles to videos now. I think this could be one of the reasons why viewership dropped, as fewer people can watch your videos now. So I translated your latest video into Chinese (both traditional and simplified), so maybe more people could start watching your videos again. One of my friends watched your videos before but stopped because there's no subtitle of his language. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11J1hqZwEMQAa324T6A2YkQe0Zo8aEV8f/view?usp=sharing

2021-06-18 13:46:25 +0000 UTCHi Gabe, I think your videos are amazing! Both An-225 and Inflatoplane, each in their turn, have brought the visual quality to a next level. My only criticism used to be the excessive amount of chromatic aberrations, but you seem to have addressed that. I'm personally not big fan of trains, and they might be a bit alien in otherwise aviation-focused channel, but they certainly have their audience too. After all, if this is one of the topics of your interest, you should explore it as you please :) Keep on doing what you're doing - I'm always excited about seeing new episodes!

2021-06-10 17:38:45 +0000 UTCI love your videos.. .but then I guess that would also be evident by the fact I am a patreon. Seriously, one of the toughest times of my day is when I'm all caught up on mustard videos and there's nothing left to watch.... What I have noticed is that your videos have dropped from my feed and often, I have to do the old "Hey, I haven't seen mustard in a while.. what's he up to?" search. Frankly, I think your videos (and Wendover's, as you mention) are my favourites on all of Youtube... they hit my sweet spot. So I wonder.. is it a problem with the algorythm? Is it delivering them less often into feeds for some reason? I think others have covered off how to better capitalize on how it works so I won't repeat... but I'm hoping that by doing those things (and using some of the great recommendations here) you'll get into more people's feeds AND they'll watch. Don't listen too much to me... but I do want to thank you for these videos.
2021-06-02 20:27:04 +0000 UTCAlso, FWIW i just watched this Veritasium video about YouTube and found it super enlightening. I'm a patron of his channel as well, and he literally polls his patrons on which title and thumbnail is "most clickable" before he publishes. And I'm sure we'd all be happy to offer you that quick feedback too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHsa9DqmId8
2021-06-01 00:47:27 +0000 UTCUFOs are all the rage right now, so I like the suggestion someone made earlier of adding some space topics. Also, as much as i love oddballs like inflatable planes, they're not as clickable as something familiar. Every couple videos should probably be about an instantly recognizable topic, and you can intersperse the oddballs for the rest of us Mustard nerds. Having said that, putting 2 and 2 together, and I'd love to see a mustard video on the SATURN V rocket!!!
2021-06-01 00:43:43 +0000 UTCFirst of all, your videos are great. That's the main reason why we're here. I'd say, by the way, that the last few videos were lacking a bit on the story telling side. For instance, your video on the Buran started by listing the "six" Space Shuttles: that was a good example of -light- humour that helped getting engaged in watching the video. Another example, in the A300 video, when you added that bit of "drama" when it seemed like the program was about to be shut off, just to flip the situation with the deal with Eastern, that was brilliant. The latest videos, especially the SCMAGLEV one, lacked... something in the way facts were presented. I also think a bit more in-depth technical explanations will also be okay for most of your audience. Can't wait to see a new video from you. ;)

2021-05-31 17:28:47 +0000 UTCI'm not sure how useful anecdotal evidence is, but I have watched all of your videos at least twice over (some of them probably 10 times), and yet I did not get recommended the SC Maglev video until 3 days after it was published. Normally I expect Mustard videos to be right on the top of my recommended list.
2021-05-31 15:21:38 +0000 UTCGreat discussion here. Thank you, fellow patrons. Gabe/Mustard, I also believe our own share/networking is down due to the pandemic and fatigue with electronic communications. Aside from all else pointed out here regarding YouTube, our resharing videos with our own networks is likely not like it was in 2019. It will take some time for that to recover. Apologies for that hit. I will strive to do better and I just reshared the SCMaglev video to my friends. Thank you for the wonderful work, Mustard. If all else, I do believe you have entered the long term memory of Homo sapiens, and these videos will be rewatched by future generations!
2021-05-31 11:42:11 +0000 UTCI might run some polls, but I also love the idea of keeping the topics a bit of a surprise. Especially when the machine is lesser known. The next couple videos will be on machines that are very unknown but fascinating. I think "go in-depth on somewhat niche topics" is exactly what I should double down on. Thanks for your comment and support!
