JOANN Fabric and Crafts: Can They Craft A Comeback?

Some Walmarts do carry fabric 🙂 A few of the large locations here in the Phoenix area have bolts of fabric and a cutting table. The selection is probably half of what Joann has though .

I was thinking as I was watching this video - how are people going to get fabric to make garments, etc? If Joann Fabrics closes. You mentioned in the video that the store sells a lot of things that places like Target and Walmart do, but neither of those stores sell fabric. Blind buying fabric online (ie: Amazon) would be too risky as I would imagine people would like to feel the fabric first and inspect it a lot more closely before buying it. I live in a place where the Fashion District is less than 10 miles away, so if we lost our Joann Fabric’s .. it wouldn’t be that detrimental. But others may not have that option. In addition to those who do Cosplay, I know a lot of people around my age (40 years old) who will buy fabric to make their own vintage inspired clothing, and many of those people go to Joann to buy fabric and patterns. If their stores close completely, I wonder if this would make it a lot more difficult for those who still like to sew and make their own outfits (young AND older alike). Great video and commentary, as always. Look forward to the next video.

My mom used to go there once in a while. My take is that the rise of two income families has put a big dent in the free time that women would have spent crafting or sewing. I’m not sure how Joann’s could have adapted to that.
