One More Thing: Dreamstalker

Greetings Adventurers,

It's the end of our spooky month releases and I think it's been a blast taking the time to create some spooky items for your games. Next month we'll be moving back to our varied release schedule, but we have one more spooky thing to drop into your games. Here's our Dreamstalker.

Design notes from Matthew:
This is one of the more long term things I've wanted to create for 5E and PF2E. I think that there are far too few creatures that involve walking the dreaming world. There's just a lot of juice within something like that and I've been wanting to actually create a creature that does stalk the dreaming world. There's something evocative about the possible last point of sanctuary for someone's mind being invaded that seemed evocative.
In the 5E version, I mostly wanted to write my own mechanics as there's a lot that I didn't see present in the base game. This lead to me mostly writing custom abilities, but I do think they all get the job done in their own ways. One of the harder things to write here was the nightmare function itself as I wanted it to be a persistent mark and outside of hexes, there's not a lot to go off of there.
In the PF2E version, I expanded the spell list a lot more but kept the custom abilities to a much lower tier. That's mostly because I've been reading more and more into spell lists in PF2E and seeing the potential power of them when used properly. I did want to expand the nightmare spell though just a bit and so I gave it a custom cast which I thought was fun.

We've reached the end of spooky month and Fernando and I are increasing our preparations for PAX Unplugged. We can't wait to be out there and see you all in Philadelphia if you happen to be attending. I'm looking forward to getting away for a bit and being amongst my fellow TTRPG nerds.
