Greetings adventurers!

At first I thought this horn was simply some clown’s gimmick meant to give the crowd a giggle and to move on with the show, but upon closer inspection, there’s something devious about this particular horn. One of the more fascinating facts is that it can change its sound on a whim, but even more interesting is the sheer volume it can produce. I haven’t heard much like it and if I’m honest, I haven’t heard much since either. I’m sure that’s going to go away any time now. Am I hearing bells ringing?

Design notes from Matthew:

I always tell folks if you’re going to design something silly, just go all in. Putting in one silly aspect or just a minor silly detail can be fine, but if you have a concept and it’s a little goofy, then I say just make it ridiculous. There’s not much reason to hold back when you’re already dipping halfway in. It’s a good reminder as well to folks that these are games we’re playing and while there is a time and place for serious storylines, there’s also a time and place for the ridiculous nature of what a magical world could be.

In this particular piece, the initial idea was for the extremely loud horn to go along with the hangover demon we’re releasing later on today. We had some great inspiration from Saturday morning cartoons back in the day and the giant mouth horn just seemed so obvious for exactly what we were doing. It’s perfectly referential and reads immediately to anyone that engaged with that older style of cartoon. You could almost guess what it does from the visuals and I think that speaks to good visual design.

The last little addition just for me was the ability to make a comical sound effect that people would have a hard time determining the origins of. I think that can just add some comic relief to a moment when needed, or could be used mechanically to embarrass someone in public. If you’re convincing enough, I’m sure you could get a crowd to believe that particular noise came from some important person you wish to embarrass.

It’s our final item for the month of August and now we’ll be firmly heading into fall. I can’t complain too much as I do enjoy the fall season itself and all of the wonderful festivals that come with it. With spooky season just around the bend, we’ll be gearing up to create some haunting items in October once more as well. I hope you’ve had a great summer!
