The Earth.

I’m back! Thanks for waiting so patiently while I had my little 2-week paternity hiatus. It’s busy work being a new dad, and I didn’t get much in the way of work done, naturally. I would have liked for the next post to be a big mega post that was connected to the timeline in my last post, but I didn’t get anywhere near as much done as I would have liked. The mega post was going to contain two maps and carry on the narrative from the timeline. That will be happening still, but I figured I’d show you this map of Earth so that you’ve got something to look at while the rest is on its way. There will be a big infographic mega segment which will cover in greater detail the events between Humanity receiving the Conglomerate’s warning and the creation of the Imperium. In that section, I will discuss the Final World War which this map pertains to.

For now, here’s a little descriptor covering exactly what you’re looking at here.

After the formalisation of the United Earth as a single political entity in 2121, several separatist movements immediately started to spring up across the globe, many of which had been brewing for quite some time. These independence movements were started for the most part from an overwhelming feeling of covetousness within certain population groups as a result of the United Earth’s granting of semi-autonomous regions to what the UE categorised as “indigenous peoples”. There were still unmixed populations here and there that considered themselves natives to their land, but whom were not officially recognised by the UE as “indigenous” and were thus deprived of this right to self-determination and autonomy granted to the various “indigenous” groups.

Most of these independence movements made their case to the UE in a peaceful and legal manner at first, but their claims were rejected; they made their appeal on the basis of “the right to self-determination,” which entails the entitlement of all peoples/nations to have control over their destiny. They argued that by being subsumed into a larger political system that was non-specific to them, they could not pursue their own destiny. Many of these movements lost momentum when the legal channels had been closed to them; others turned to more physical means of reaching their ends.

After decades, and in some cases even centuries of fighting, a period dubbed the “independence wars”, the United Earth, feeling strained, finally decided to make some concessions, at least in part. The United Earth granted only part of what these nativist movements were demanding; therefore, the natives only gained control over a fraction of their homeland. The UE did this so that these new nation-states would not be able to threaten their hegemony. By allowing the various nativist factions a partial victory, it defused their animosity towards the UE like a pressure valve. With time, relations between the UE and these various disparate nations normalised, and trade became a regular occurrence between them.

However, these new sovereign territories were not all nations in the true sense of the word. The word nation literally means “a race of people”, an aggregation of persons of the same ethnic family, with shared heritage and who speak the same language. Some of these new states were religious states like Hindustan and Deseret. They achieved sovereignty by utilising their faith to consolidate areas in which believers were concentrated into new organised political bodies. Other states were civic and propositional in nature, like Texas and O Estado Livre Da Cidade Maravilhosa, who used the powerful motivator of freedom to split off from the United Earth to form territories in which liberty prevails. Some long-standing separatist movements like Catalunya, Silesia, and Abkhazia, for example, capitalised on this general push for independence to make massive gains of their own. There were also unique states that popped up, like Neu Canaan, who were successful in their independence pleas to the United Earth on the basis that they should become a culturally protected zone. Their pacifist nature and the fact that they were completely independent from UE infrastructure helped them in this legal matter.

However, the rule and not the exception of these various independence movements was that they were nationalist and nativist in nature. This meant they pushed for the creation of a sovereign homeland for their own people, where they could go on existing as they are into the future. The semi-autonomous indigenous territories also later pursued full statehood after witnessing the success of other nations around the world.
