IRC has always been a cringe fest, I was there 10'000 years ago an it sucked back then as it sucks today. Discord is just raw surveillance capitalism. Everyone on discord is part of the matrix until they have been unplugged, that means shoot on sight, like coppers ! I move my circle of friend a couple years back to XMPP, it's a big kludge but it's my server and we're end-to-end encrypted in a way I can verify. We test regularly with jokes of killing the president. The president of every country on Earth with gun bearing drones (we're too classy for grenades). But we're considering switching, signal's been kind of fake open source and make self-hosting a asshle so no dice. I have a good feel about Matix. We'd be staying on XMPP but lack of opengraph support in gajim and conversations succcks. For voice we use mumble because nothing else is worth our time. 2024-09-08 18:24:14 +0000 UTCAll this to say, Discord simultaneously sacrifices the useful public nature of forums and IRC chats in terms of archiving and public collaboration in exchange for the fake impression of "private" communities with invasive keylogging and analytics gathering, more invasive than public forums and IRC (and other not-crap chat protocols), and also encouraging the same NPD and dopamine addiction anti-social behaviours as microblogging services. (And microtransactions too, yay!)

2024-09-08 18:20:03 +0000 UTCThere is a difference between IRC logs, either on the server or done through a bot, and the keylogging required for Discord's gimmicky "as you type" features. Furthermore, there is a presumed expectation that *public* IRC chat rooms on *public* servers are necessarily *public*, so people who act stupidly and face *public* consequences are doing so by their own hand. Same with public forums like PHPBB. Discord, on the other hand, presents itself as quasi-private with required logins (i.e. no public access), yet is less secure than the public options I mentioned because of said-keylogging. Further, IRC does not actually store chat logs by itself. Chats are instead recorded by the client locally or optionally by the server, but the expectation are that IRC chats are in volatile memory. Discord not only stores every message permanently on their servers barring moderator action, and makes it difficult to mass delete messages, but it also paradoxically makes it far more difficult to archive insightful chats and messages, a feat easily accomplished with IRC.

Indeed, "we" don't have to use Discord even now as there exists alternatives as I write, amazing! However, they probably lack the dopamine/NPD exploitation features Discord has that are borrowed from micro-blogging platforms like Twitter/X. Hence my original statement/criticism, which I will note you never actually addressed.

I like that I can do watch parties with them with chat after the death of rabbit. I like being able to schedule events that will time sync for all of us. I like being able to share files and links and memes with the homies. They’re not innovative things, it’s just nice to have them all in one place. LOL EDIT 2: A "live forum" that is a pain to index/search through (and near impossible outside of the Discord client - say goodbye to finding useful insight with a search engine), difficult to backup or archive, uses an Electron-based (read, JavaScript-laden) sluggish interface, and completely reliant on the whims of the Discord organization. In other words, it's inferior to even self-hosted PHPBB in 2008, with no major advantages other than being tied to other bloated Discord services. EDIT 3: None of the features listed are at all unique or innovative, and some are decades old with other services, some even close to actually being "free".
