I've long held a theory that anti-centrism was a criticism of "big tent" organizing on the left. Basically the argument would go "well if we can have left unity, where all kinds of different stripes of left-wingers all align together, why can't we have extremist unity?, Where literally anyone who wants to change the status quo ally together?"
