Yesterday was a "start a bunch of ideas and not finish 'em" kind of day. It's been a while since I've had one of those kinds of writing days so I guess I was due. I was actually getting a touch nervous I wouldn't have anything ready for today but lo and behold, something finally clicked and here we are. :D
In FF9, especially towards the latter half of the game, I always really enjoyed how even in medieval type environments, Uematsu would use some very non-medieval style instruments and sounds. Mount Gulug is what usually sticks out in my mind. It's pretty synth heavy, both with it's bassline and some of the melody lines. It's also layered with some standard orchestral stuff, but idk, I just always really enjoyed that. All that to say, this song took some inspiration from that approach.
