I've got a guaranteed influence: The Night Land (1912), a rather lengthy SF+F hybrid novel by William Hope Hodgson. Written in pseudo-archaic English, it tells of a future world of eternal, icy night populated by humanoid monsters, giant crabs, and soul-eating forces, in which the remnants of humanity survive in a gigantic fortress pyramid that contains hundreds of cities. When the hero, with his telepathically augmented radio, learns of the existence of another pyramid that contains the reincarnation of his ancient love, he grabs his armor, his supplies -- and most importantly his DISKOS, a mystical battle ax with a glowing circular saw on the end -- and sets off across the monster-haunted wastes to find her. Read it last Christmas season, and for all its faults (and to me there weren't *too* many, since I totally got into the poetry of the faux-ye olde stuff), it's powerful, unforgettable, epic storytelling. In VG terms, it's like Rygar plus Dark Souls . . . but with lots of manly manness and passionate EMOTION. The readers among you should check it out when you get some free time.
