Calamitous announcement READ THIS OR DON'T COMPLAIN LATER
Added 2025-01-11 13:30:04 +0000 UTCA couple of months back, I sold the audio rights to Bob to Soundbooth. That means Bob will go audio with some of the highest possible quality the market can offer and I’m serious because we have two voice actors, music, sound effects… the works. I listened to a short sample and I was floored by Solfis’s voice. This also means that the onus is on me to do my part so Soundbooth can succeed in making Bob popular when Journey wasn’t.
Now you may know my stance on Kindle Unlimited. I think monopolies are a blight, but right now Amazon has it so it’s their way or the highway. For Journey, I picked the highway. It will remain freely available on RR forever. The audiobook also didn’t do very well commercially. For Bob, I’m no longer alone in this so KU it is.
The audiobook of the first Calamitous Bob will be out on January the 28th. I’ll push that same first book to KU over a week before that (because I may also need to send takedown requests to some sites). Per Amazon’s conditions, said book will be removed everywhere else. That means it will be pulled off both RR and Patreon.
This is your last chance to read/reread/download the first twenty-four chapters. After that, Bob will be stubbed on RR and the aforementioned chapters removed from Patreon.

2025-03-02 02:10:36 +0000 UTCHonestly, my only real issue with the Journey audiobooks was that there didn't seem to be an audible distinction between normal Ariane, Vampire Compelled Ariane, and Beast Ariane, which I kept expecting to be properly distinguished vocally like they are in text, but didn't quite seem to translate into audio.

But let's not kid ourselves and pretend you can't get all of these KU stories for free with a tiny bit of googling. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make money off your works. The issue with RR is that he's already tapped into the vast majority of the readerbase and growth that's possible from it. The KU readerbase is much larger. If he takes down journey from RR for a year, how many potential readers is he losing? A few hundred maybe? To be generous, a couple thousand? KU could let him pull tens of thousands, easily, and they could go on to read his other works. Obviously, it's his decision, but in terms of exposure and pulling in new readers, not using KU is shooting yourself in the foot. The author being more popular and more financially secure is something that I hope most readers would like and understand.

2025-01-11 17:17:47 +0000 UTCPerhaps in the short term. Long term I would suggest keeping journey free forever so that people can read a full story without paying. People generally appreciate good free content, especially if they can finish a story. They will be more inclined to pay for a different story if they know the author and like the previous story. Also, putting it up on kindle and removing from RR just seems like a money grap. While there are many good reasons to do that, keeping your new audience happy is key to growing. At least that’s my take on it ;).

You don't necessarily have to keep it up there forever either. You can release them on KU for like a year, then pull them off and back to RR if you want. I do agree Amazon's business practices suck though. Would be nice if there was a better alternative.

2025-01-11 14:02:37 +0000 UTCThe latest compilation for Bob, AFAIK, was in april 2024: https://www.patreon.com/posts/bob-calamity-18-101816607 It contains chapter 181-190 both in .epub and .pdf format. For older compilations you need search the collections. Mecanims has done them every 10 chapters.

I respect and understand the bussiness decision behind it for you. Especially given the fact you already tried highway and it didn´t work. Will there be or is there already some link for epub books before KU takes it down? I don´t like the option of reading and downloading it one chapter by one.

I just re read it last month for the 4th or 5th time since it was completed, and had followed it from the first few chapters. Its so well written compared to much of the stuff on RR and out there in general these days. I hope that this shift in methods for Bob gets it enough attention that new fans find Journey by extension and it also picks up some. . "we have two voice actors, music, sound effects… the works." That sounds amazing. Yknow, I have never bought an audio book. I tried 2 or 3 free samples like 15 years ago, and never looked at any again. But that description, and Solfis having a VA too, makes me excited enough to actually want to try an audio book again.
