[Salvos] 152. A Dime a Dozen (Removed for KU)

honestly and I know I have been trolling this a lot but whatever, one of the things that annoy me most about it is that the sleep thing was mostly as far as I can tell just a cheap gag with no real thought into why she would fall asleep immediately. The "narrative potential" of that gag was "oh I can see this coming a mile away and it's kind of stupid" but then you start thinking about the implications of a sleep deficit and since it isn't at all explained you are left with "oh the author did something with probably catastrophic consequences based on a system that would cause that for a cheap gag that wasn't even really funny". Game balance aside that's really really annoying. Plus from a narrative perspective salvos has been trying to get this awesome level 100 achievement for like what half the story so far and when she does she gets basically nothing for it but a cheap gag.

Seems like this chapter has generated decent discourse about whether Salvos's new abilities are good enough or not, but, personally, I'm not sure why the in-universe system needs to be criticized from the perspective of 'game balance' or what have you. To me, the narrative potential of the new abilities is what's interesting, and adversity creates plot - yeah sleeping and eating are a hassle for Salvos, but Salvos having to deal with sleeping and eating? Gold. Since I don't really understand the perspective, I'm curious if some of the people who do feel like the new evolution/class are bad, would you want them to actually be more powerful? Or if the story just directly acknowledged them as having been bad options, would that be okay?

The implied 'sleep debth' is probably the main contention and potential problem. It obviously doesnt apply for a sense of hunger, or she'd be ravenous too. But say she now continues to go for weeks before she turns into her partial mortality form a gain... will she immediately conk out and snooze once more? That seems like an incredibly dangerous liability if so. And if it doesn't.. why did it happen when she did it the first time? Not expecting us to get the explanation for that outright.. but its definitely going to be something to be curious about going forward. Being able to skip sleep by turning non-mortal is hardly broken considering she used to not need sleep at all in the first place. I mean.. sleep would have to do something positive for her for it to be an upgrade. That said I do see how this is an evolution of sorts, she's become even more mortal-like while in such a form and there are definite advantages in terms of maintaining the disguise.. the downside being potentially getting her throat slit while asleep and so on. Bit of a sidegrade in that sense so far? The wierd part I guess is how her demonic form, which used to be her 'true' form priorly, is now a skill while her actual true form seems.. well, there's a purpose to it too I dare expect since its clearly not for passing as a mortal nor is it clearly the ideal battle form... Some kind of intermediary utility form that doesnt have the flaws of needing sleep like a mortal nor being so large and ... complicated as her demon form.. so more of a utility mode? Will be fun to see going ahead!

I mean maybe but Salvos has always been about bettering herself in a based on the numbers and skills way rather than hanging around in a hippy comune...I get where you are coming from but I'm not sure how having a pleasant dream is going to help her accomplish any of her driving goals. "Oh daniel last night I had a dream about how much I like icecream and now I realized how foolish I have been, lets just cast the chocolate fudge spell to travel the realms and help my buddy and get you home.." Since the very beginning Salvos has been ridiculously goal oriented I cant see her seeing these changes as anything but useless bs that is getting in her way.

I don't agree with most of these comments this is an evolution and not in some dumb numbers but in her potential for understanding and growth as a entity known as salvos she could become a princess she could do and be a lot more on any plane by becoming partial mortal she could understand and learn things removing a lot of her her ignorance and therefore being able to access personhood and stop being treated like less than or not a entity thats self actualized like she desired. So i don't see sleeping or these other things as a disadvantage, sleeping can be wonderful to removes stress and dream s and there is more to eating then just consumptionll.l Thanks for writing this author I hope this reaches you

The girl's been awake for like 3 or 4 years straight. Why exactly would you expect her to be "fresh at that point?"

Melting Sky

Salvos's mortal forms have needs now. Wow. Trash tier. Edithe really is dumb if she can't see the problem. Also doesn't explain why she would fall asleep instantly after transforming. She should have been fresh at that point.

Venalitor

based on the stat points its a first time evolution. those level 10 spells are surely going to be amazing.

So I have a couple of questions regarding this. 1. Obviously it was intended for laughs and to open it up for Salvos to freak out in this chapter but what is the in universe reason for this fatigue hitting Salvos all at once? Was there some hidden fatigue bar that was building up the entire time Salvos was pretending to be human? If so was that bar just never going to matter if she decided to become a matriarch instead? 2. Is this eating and sleeping requirement of mortal form going to build up and force Salvos to eventually sleep and eat if she wants to be able to use her skill? If so is the compensation of having not having lowered stats, which at this point is a rather small percentage of the total a worthwhile trade to not being able to protect herself a third of the time in mortal form (sleep), or use her time to better herself by studying or experimenting? It feels like no, if fact it doesn't even feel close. 3. Her main benefit that she's gained from this evolution that we know of so far is her demonic essence skill. Is this skill restricted to being used in her demon form? If so that seems a weird mismatch for a evolution that is supposedly about her being more aligned with her mortal form. 4. Unless the plan is that Salvos tries food and loves it and has a sweet tooth banana-split eating montage this evolution seems like it gave her more reasons to avoid mortal form instead of embrace it. Is there benefits I'm missing other than the benefits she already had outside potentially 'food is yummy' somewhere down the line? IIRC an earlier chapter mentioned that evolutions that had restrictions or imposed negatives were unusually powerful so I can only assume her non-general skills she got must be absolutely OP bonkers to make up for how meh everything else is. I suppose it gives more skill slot efficiency if nothing else. The classes were okayish, it's hard to be excited about them when we don't really have a reference to their relative strength. Hopefully we will see something uniquely interesting come out of it.

I didn't realize that her sleepiness was just "normal" sleep. Since it came out of nowhere and she couldn't resist it ... (RKO xD )

Gonvas

"And we the Fae shall call you Twinkletoes." "I am Salvos." (Add emphasis) "...Salvos Twinkletoes." "...i can live with that. "

luda305

And now her flames will be white and of creation :P

Almander

Thanks for the chapter. Gotta say I thought the implication of her passing out was extremely clear. A really good example of show not tell.

Joshua Little

She hasn’t looked at the non general skills yet, though, has she? It’s a bit early to call them shit.

Kevin Caffrey

she really did kinda get skrewed for a capstone level she really got nothing good. isn't this the level that makes normal demons capable of fighting kingdoms solo...she got the desire to never use one of her primary skills again and a couple shit spells

Nick Tinsley

I mean, the baker and the Smith were funny :D and I thought the summoner was nice reference to their past adventures. The Fae and Spacial Magics stuff makes sense - tying those two together isn't uncommon. Maybe it will become clear that this was actually quite rare to unlock and only available due to her encounter with the fae, which is probably obvious and certainly seemed like a rare occurrence. The description just seemed a little light. I guess we'll have to see what the abilities actually "do".

Adam Daw

I thought it was clear, but I was also confused that it hit her immediately. It makes things pretty awkward if she accumulates some sort of sleep/hunger debt in her default form and has it hit her all at once after she transforms. On the other hand, it would also be a bit broken if she could avoid sleep altogether by just switching out of mortal form when she gets sleepy. The thing that makes the most sense to me is if she accumulates fatigue and hunter in her mortal form, so after a cumulative of 16 hours or so in mortal form she would need to sleep (even if that’s spread out over multiple instances of mortal form). From a narrative point of view it was impactful for her to pass out right away after getting the skill, but it also didn’t make a lot of sense.

Kevin Caffrey

Nah, comments are good. Let’s me know to clarify and improve stuff

MelasD

I thought it was clear, but I could see how people would be confused. Whenever this goes out to the public maybe you should put up an authors note about it at the end. Or you could just ignore the comments until this chapter comes out lol

Lictor Magnus

Any reason why?

MelasD

Classes were a bit of a letdown :/
