Brook gazed over the nearly empty waiting room. Before going on with her business she took a few moments to reminisce about her time here in the research department as a cadet.

Back then the waiting room was teeming with new cadets assigned to take part in various research projects. It was a nice and easy way to finish your cadet training. If you were lucky the research project you took part in would become the new hot thing and you would be rocketing up the ranks because of your first hand knowledge and experience with the new tech.

Brook made a lot of friends down here at the then newly built R&D department. She didn't manage to hit any jackpots during her time here sadly. But with blood, sweat, and tears she managed to get herself to Lieutenant Commander. However, she was still longing for the day she would be simply Commander.

Commander Decker has a nice ring to it, Brook thought to herself before snapping back to the bleak reality.

The sad truth was that the R&D department was just a shell of its former self now. The budget had been cut severely and most researchers had been let go.

Only one full time researcher remained...
