104: Ranting and Rating

Tune in to a lively debate on the merits (if there are any) of ratings and reviews of art. Or don't, what the hell do I care! Well, actually, it'd be nice if you did. Thank you. Please. Thank you.

unpaused and remembered some points- awstens also right that effort should absolutely be considered! ex art criticism and teaching: not getting a still life completely proportional on one side, but clearly trying hard and using all available techniques should equal a reasonably good grade. but travis is equally right that it cant all be “a for effort” based. like in terms of objective ratings with sugar fish, id compare it to my reviews on my local small town chinese food place vs the one i had in ny. both were really good! both were authentic (family owned and operated by chinese families, offering traditional chinese and american chinese foods) but mine does their general chicken with more sauce and is spicier which i prefer, so it won. comparing the same local place to other more local places- a non chinese owned restaurant of the same franchise an hour away is worse quality to me, as it lacks the same flavors/textures and authenticity in the foods i tried (like their noodles were rounded not flat etc.) a different one an hour in the other direction, different chain (?), but also asian owned, has general chicken thats just more watery and not nearly spicy enough so i prefer not to get it when im there. like others mentioned, this is a funny convo given what the podcast originated from. but to add onto that, you guys have talked about the fact that its often not fair to the writers to compare certain fic to some other fic or to go into them being jaded/used to some things etc

i am only 2/3 thru listening but had to pause (it and work) to yap before i forgot. i love this conversation and agree with different parts of both pov! as a visual artist thats been in college art classes with critique + someone who may very well become an art teacher, part of any reviewing process has both objective and subjective values assigned to it. theyre equally important, but in art critique it usually *is* stated as “i personally dont favor [x] pieces, however you followed the assignment/know your techniques/have a good grasp on anatomy” etc. in this example you will still receive some sort number/letter grade and the majority of what determines it is objective, but not all. additionally, while taste in art/music/food/service etc *is* usually subjective there are certain aspects of them that have to be studied or “mastered” etc to be deemed fit for widespread use/consumption. like with food its health and safety, with visual art its technical ability to translate reality or concepts into any given medium in a way that makes relative sense/is digestable or is appealing to the specific atmosphere its meant for, etc. numbers/stars often arent as helpful when it comes to art, due to increased subjectivity, as they are for places of business/service- and even then a good reviewer would specify (mentally or verbally) differences between objective lack of quality control vs taste. but for the sake of simplicity/broad understanding, numbers or stars can help to visually categorize an overall picture of someones feelings on/experience with [x]. this is why a lot of places or review videos have multiple star ratings for different themes. i can understand where awstens coming from with the idea that reviewers should try to be as objective as possible, and i agree. hes also right that in an ideal world people would form their own opinions, but could hear others and think critically about whether they actually align with it, but they often dont. however travis is right that much about reviews is fundamentally opinion based and going into a review should generally warrant unwritten understanding that 1) its already mainly subjective unless stated 2) you should think critically about it regardless of having the review or not. id love to hear more philosophical views from yall!!

What a great conversation about media literacy and the decline of critical thinking affecting artistry as a whole

Britt Hadaway

Awsten: I want to know why you don’t like bagels and that’s a waste of calories but you’ll have a Hawaiian roll on the podcast

Britt Hadaway

i am now listening to this episode while walking home from the doctors

taitai

“a numerical rating system is a flawed concept” being Awsten’s conclusion of this ep is sooo funny bc this whole podcast was literally created for you guys to read and numerically rate fanfics 😭😭

heather little

I listen to the podcast driving to work or during my prep period at work

Jenna

The topic of art was topical to me with the conversations I've been having this past week+.

LightningZBolt

you both made such good points idk which side to be on

juliana🎸

Sorry for commenting so much on here, but this was such an interesting episode. I agree with awsten that too often people let reviews dictate how they feel about something and it’s a flawed system, but also agree with Travis when he said that’s not the fault of the reviewer or the creator. Don’t have a perfect solution, I just think media literacy and critical thinking needs to be implemented more. 10/10 episode

Sydney Carper

Awsten not liking bagels is so real of him (I also don’t like bagels)

Sarah ✨

Travis I don't think you love Awsten enough

So I finish this episode and I’ve got a good example when I had to take programming classes when I was studying for computer science most teachers were just give us an assignment and we would have to come up with the program. Sometimes we were given specific instructiont sometimes not. And in programming there are so many ways to reach a goal, but it didn’t matter if you solved the problem. Sometimes you would get graded poorly because of how it was coded even at the syntax was correct and it did what it was supposed do. Didn’t matter if we spent hours on it. Like some things are objective. Some things are subjective. Some things both.

ALRIGHT BIG JOBBBB

CANT ESCAPE YOU??? filing a restraining order

Anna Oleniczak

bringing this up in court.

As someone who works in restaurants, Awsten made a good point about people mainly leaving reviews when they have a bad experience.

Nick

I listen to ATSP Premium either driving to work or in my office at work. I work at an OB/GYN office as a surgical scheduler.

Amanda

My uber driver in Nashville made fun of me for being on my phone the whole drive and then commented on the fact that he could have kidnapped me 🙃

Kasey G

good for them (i guess ??) but also i'm so sorry you have to hear that all the time 😶

b

if you listened to a conversation between me and my roommate, it would sound exactly like this (she’s travis. she is so smart.)

tantrumwtrparx

What does the anti-number/star scale rating mean for the future of fanfic reviews on ATSP ?

b

any review is inherently personal, especially on art. sometimes you just love a shitty movie that wasn't even made like that on purpose. i don't think anything can be objectively good or bad and accepted by everyone.

pamir

you guys have 3 seasons giving your opinions i don’t understand why this concept was so hard for him

nicole
