Template Evolution - 2019 vs. 2021
Added 2021-11-03 18:22:55 +0000 UTCOne of my patrons was recently posting on social media that he was following some of the things that I have been talking about on here regarding mix/template etc. transfering that into his template and also mentioning that he took down some of his older music from streaming platforms because his mixes were so much better now, which is great to hear.
While I was just working on another update of my template, I thought it might be fun to show you a comparison of how the sound of my template changed over the last years.
The audio file above shows a comparison in three snippets between my late 2019 template and my current template. First always comes the old mockup, second the current state.
I was working alot over the last years on the room ambience and tutti sound. In the old state from 2019 (mainly Orchestral Tools libraries) I was struggling alot with the mud that the tree mics were creating vs. the "on your nose" effect from the close mics. As you can hear, the old mockup relies heavily on the close mics which as consequence leaves almost no depth of field in the sound. In a detailed piece like this, the mud buildup of the libraries was just insane that I needed to go to the closer mics. The old mockup has almost no effects on the signal paths except for a few mild EQs and some reverb.
With the new template, I have these mud buildups way better under control (by relying on carefully crafted signal chains) so I can use more of the room mics to create some depth of field. There are still some unpolished things in the new mockup and some more things that I want to try out but I thought I'd show you a current state of things :)
Of course, the libraries have changed as well, OT libraries have been demoted to second chairs and supporting libraries while on the front are Cinematic Studio and VSL Synchron Brass.
