About the Wood Vault

Just like for our Studio HDRI Vault, we noticed that wood textures are in high remand on polyhaven.com, and although we have quite a few already, it's the sort of thing that you always need more of.

In particular we saw the need for "raw wood": scans of unfinished plain wood that can be used as the basis for many kinds of materials with some adjustments or procedural setups.

If you're making a shiny parquet floor, it's easy to start with a raw wood material and add the parquet pattern procedurally and adjust the roughness to make it shine. There are almost an infinite number of variations you can create from a good set of raw wood scans. But if you start with a finished parquet texture, you can tweak the material a little bit but it's always going to be a parquet texture.

Of course, a scanned parquet (or herringbone, or any other kind of board joinery pattern) texture will always be more realistic than a procedurally generated one, so we have plenty of those too, but we decided we needed a bit more raw wood on the site.

To accomplish this, many months ago we asked our texture authors to be on the lookout for wood surfaces to scan, and slowly started building up content for the Vault.

In addition to that, we purchased a set of veneers of various kinds of common and exotic woods and scanned those in bulk.

Ultimately, we created 55 new wood textures:

The Wood Texture Vault is currently available in early-access to all $3+ Patreon supporters, and is set to release publicly once we reach 3700 active Patreon supporters.
