I'm still not entirely satisfied with the background but all I can do is keep practicing, right?
If it wasn't obvious already, the chapter is called "Leaving the Cave" because Suzie was learning the Allegory of the Cave in the pilot. In a way, she's leaving the world she knew to discover what's really out there.
For those who may not know, Plato's Allegory of the cave is about a group of prisoners who spend their whole lives in a cave where they are chained and can only see shadows on the wall. The shadows, to them, are what things are, what the world is. But one of these prisoners is freed and discovers that the shadows are cast by what's real, that fire casts the shadows, and as he ventures out of the cave the outside world and sunlight would be too much to look at. The prisoner would have to take things in steps, looking at things through shadows and reflections before he's ready to eventually look at everything head on. And once he discovers the truth and beauty of the world, he returns to the cave to share with the other prisoners what he knows. But they don't believe him, and insist that the shadows are what the world really is.
Of course this is a metaphor, mostly for discovering new philosophies.
It's definitely my favorite work of Plato's, it's stuck with me since high school.
