My visa plans are still failing. So I have 6-9 months of wandering around the world until I can get the visa I need. Where fate will take me I don’t know yet... but I definitely want to get to Barcelona and I hope that they will let me into Mexico)
I am periodically asked to describe my feelings before, during and after the shoot, how I choose a location, how I compose, what I pay attention to, how I then select the material. And in fact, in each shoot it happens a little differently. I will try to write a little about this in each post.
This self-portrait shoot took place in May on the island of Naxos in Greece. At that time I was working with one of the photographers and in my free time from posing I could take self-portraits. This was the version of the shoot when I was already at this location. I already communicated with the environment, I knew how the light falls, since we shot at this location with this photographer. And if before I didn’t want to repeat locations in my pictures, now for me it became like small studies and curiosities - how I see this place, how I can interact with textures, lines and light in a new way, how my self-portraits will differ from the pictures of the photographer for whom I posed as a model.
At this location, there is a rather serious shallow structure of the stone (direct sunlight emphasizes this and makes it even sharper). Therefore, it is very advantageous to show body on it, which has a smooth structure and smoothness. The only thing to consider is that it is very easy to lose the subject of the photo against the background of such a texture. So I focused on large and medium shots. Thanks to the large shadows from the recesses or hollows of the stone itself, I was able to shoot several general shots where I placed the body near this shadow or completely against the background of the shadow to highlight and draw attention to the body itself. Sometimes even the shadow from the body to the background played a significant role, such as in the first few photos.
Also, due to the very aggressive texture of the rock, in post-processing I chose to reduce the number of colors and reduce them to one color of simply different shades so that the colors would not distract and make a mess in the viewer's eyes and so that the shots would look holistic.
