Xenogears Questions (For The Final Episode)

Hello, everyone!

Casen and I will be recording the final episode of the Xenogears podcast this week (21 episodes in total). We're going to have Chris and Eric from Retrograde Amnesia back on, as well as Patrick Holleman from the Game Design Forum.

For this episode, we want to get some topics from the audience to discuss, so feel free to ask us any questions you have--whether it's confusion about a plot element, a certain point you want us to reconsider from earlier in the podcast, or just anything you'd like our insight on! Thanks for everything, guys! We're looking forward to seeing what questions you come up with!

Looking back was there any foreshadowing with Big Joe being from ancient times? If not… what ass pull would you have liked to see in this game?

I'm sure I'm late to the party here but I'm currently watching to Episode 20. There have been a number of plot comparisons to FF7 but wondering if you had any thoughts on parallels between JENOVA and Urobolus?

Could we get a bit of clarification on the wave existence? I’m not really sure I understand it and its role in the story.

Hi guys! New subscriber, such a huge fan of your work. Question: How do you feel the romance in Xenogears stacks up to other classic jrpgs? In terms of writing and emotion.

Based on some of the speculation they did earlier re: chu-chu and the use of flight, my gut feeling is that those scenes were handled by different event programmers, but yeah.. I also want to see them talk about this since they are so tonally inconsistent.

No question. Just want to say thank you for putting in the work that you guys do on the content you produce! I really enjoyed the Xenogears analysis.

Thank you for this Xenogears review series. This is one of the greatest achievements and experiences in JRPG Youtube section

After doing the deep dive into Xenogears, would you ever be interested in doing a Xenosaga retrospective in the future? As daunting as that probably sounds to you guys right now haha....

Do you feel that Xenogears had an influence on JRPG storytelling? Does it seem like games that came out after this strived to achieve the kind of storytelling this game went for?

With all of the consideration of time, and given that we don't know the full extent of the behind the scenes in detail, do you think that Disc 2 is presented in the best way the team could manage? Personally I feel that some scenes needed to be prioritised over others for the sake of narrative e.g. skipping the whole Elements transformation scene/Power Rangers parody, and even the scene of the Yggdrasil 4, which is a nice pay-off but totally pointless to the themes of the game, in favour of showing more pivotal moments such as the activation of the Gaetia Key. Given the skill they showed in earlier parts of the game for visual direction, in my mind the better way to deal with the time constraints would be to trim all of the fat and focus on the important scenes. #ChuChuDidNothingWrong

I'm sure you're already planning this, but would love if you quickly touched on Perfect Works and what it added to your experience/understanding. I recall Mike saying that's what got him thinking deeper about the game's narrative. And I'm hoping the discussion will give me motivation to finally dive in too :) Thank you guys so much, this whole podcast meant a lot to me.

Here ya go: Stars of Tears: https://xenosaga.fandom.com/wiki/Stars_of_Tears#Japanese_.28English_translation.29 Small Two of Pieces: https://xenosaga.fandom.com/wiki/Small_Two_of_Pieces#Japanese_.28English_translation.29

Which Podcast did you guys enjoy better? FF8 or Xenogears and also which one has the best story? Thanks love the show!

Not really about the game itself but I'm curious about the Japanese versions of the two Xenogears songs that are found on the Xenogears Creid Album. Are they translations/transliterations of the original English songs or something else entirely, could Casen have a quick listen? Star of Tears = Two Wings, Mobius - Small of two pieces. PS I highly recommend the album and prefer it to the Myth one. The Wikipedia page is interesting but does not go into the lyrics.
