I was around 6 years old when Fellowship came out. I hadn't actually heard about it and my mom took me to the theaters to watch it. I must have been sleepy, because I ended up falling asleep at the beginning and waking up at the end. I would later read The Hobbit when I was in middle school, as well as Fellowship. While I love The Hobbit, I don't think I was able to appreciate Fellowship. I've passively watched the first film a few times. I wonder if this movie would have changed my life as well, had I not fallen asleep in the theater. Anyway, I'm re-reading it and keeping up with these podcasts and Mike's book analysis, and I'm really enjoying it! Tolkien's genius certainly went a bit over my head as a kid. I wonder if those who think his writing is doting and drags on had last read it as a kid? I felt that way about Fellowship during my first read, but this time I can't say anything feels wasted or unnecessary. I wonder if the first few pages of Infinite Jest or Ulysses would give those individuals a migraine, if Tolkien is too much for them!
