I didn't have any solid rules, but in the end I only ever took public transport if it was compelling for some reason (I wanted to ride that little train that one time) or it was dark outside. I really think I rode trains like 3 times total, used the ferry twice and that was it. I was usually excited to meet new people enough I was stoked to hitch. -E
