Totally second the short recommendation from John here. As a lady friend, try padded cycling shorts. Distance of ride and comfort level are directly tied to that chamois in them (the padded part). Don't wear underwear with them (friction = bad). Change them and wash them immediately when you're done riding if you can. Make sure you're leaning back on those bones in your pelvis and sitting on the bones, not soft tissue. It can be tricky but once you start doing it, it forms a good habit that will help you out! I wear the shorts under jeans if the occasion calls for it and you can wear them without something over them in the summer. I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a cutout seat yet till you try the shorts. Sorry for the too-much-info post!
