Endgame sneak peek

Still not really working on this project, but last week I jotted down a scene that popped in my head. So here you go.

(Names are subject to change. LoL)

"He slid the fabric down my arm, baring my shoulder so he could see the injury there. I shivered as soon as the cold air hit it – or maybe at the way his warm fingers brushed my skin.

"…No. It was definitely the cold air. I steeled my jaw and shut my eyes against the unreadable look on his face as he stared down at me. Definitely. The. Cold. Air."

Caleb: "Your nano-system is already repairing the damage, but it's going to bruise. It'll likely be about a day before the pain fully subsides."

Kiana: "You'd think if they can close up lacerations they fix bruises as well…"

Caleb: "It's a waste of energy. A bruise isn't going to kill you."

Kiana: "Neither is a laceration."

Caleb: "An open wound is an invitation for infection."

Kiana: "Pfft."

"I stared hard at the other side of the courtyard, still pouting at the fact I'd fallen in the first place."

Caleb: "You need to be more careful. Especially when mimicking a Rook. You haven't the slightest idea what you're doing, so if you keep pushing yourself like this you're going to end up with more than a few simple 'lacerations.'"

Kiana: "You and Ari have been going out a lot lately. There's no one for me to practice with."

Caleb: "Ari would be useless with this anyway. He's just a Knight. I'm your Rook."

"My…Rook."

"The harshness had smoothed away when he said, that and his voice took on that quiet, soothing quality it had when he wasn't angry about something. I looked up at him again, my breath catching at the sight of his face so close to mine. He was still looking down at the injury on my shoulder."

"It was strange. I'd disliked him so much at first. But now…"

"Seemingly not even noticing me looking at him, he slowly traced two fingers along my injured shoulder. This time there was no denying what caused a shiver to run through me. Caleb's eyes narrowed slightly, and his brows knit together."

"It wasn't really a glare, but he definitely seemed displeased…"

Caleb: "Sometimes, I think you really aren't cut out for this."

"My face grew warm and I looked away from him anxiously, suddenly self-conscious and awkward."

Kiana: "I've been telling you people that all along."

"Caleb leaned down and, to my astonishment, gently pressed his lips to my shoulder. I froze, entirely unsure what was happening, or what to do about it. But I barely had time to react anyway."

"He pulled away quickly and stood, resting his hand on my head for a split second before he retreated."

Caleb: "Take better care of yourself Kiana. We need you."

"He left me sitting there shirt half undone and wondering why something they'd all been parroting since my first day at the tower was punctuated with a kiss this time."
