Endgame - rough snippet
Added 2019-02-05 01:32:41 +0000 UTCA snippet of the old Endgame (pre-visual novel plans). It's just a rough and I don't know how this scene will play out in the VN though I do intend to keep it. But here it is!
-----
One of the two Espers crushed Ema to the floor, covering her head with his arms. Her face was pressed uncomfortably into his chest. She tried to shove him off but he had her arms pinned between them.
"Let go!"
"Stay down," he commanded. It was the brown haired man – the one with the teleporting ability.
Ema listened only because she’d had the wind knocked out of her when he threw her to the ground. A loud explosion shook the floor and Ema tipped her head back. Caleb was facing off with a woman in black clothing. It might have been amusing to watch the upside-down fight if the violence wasn’t in such shocking contrast to the peaceful life she’d lived until that moment. She felt reality slipping further and further from her grasp as the woman slinked back out of the fractured rainbow light and into the shadows.
Right as she winked out of sight, she looked their way. Most of her face was concealed behind what looked like some kind of breathing mask, but her pale eyes met Ema’s and a shudder ran through the girl’s body. Then, the woman was gone.
"Ari, get the queen out of here!" Caleb snapped.
Wait, queen? Huh--?
Ari bolted to his feet and yanked Ema up after him. Her head was still reeling from being thrown around, but she managed to stagger after him as he dragged her away from Caleb.
"Who is that?" she gasped.
"Unclear," Ari said. "Probably from the Sluagh."
"The who—"
Ari shoved her against the wall, planting his arms on either side of her and covering her body with his as another explosion rocked the building. It was a miracle neither of them had been hurt. With the amount of debris flying around with each of those explosions, they should have taken at least some damage.
But then, he was an Esper...
The woman was back and heading for them, but Caleb was there too, suddenly, blocking her path. Ari took Ema and headed away from their battle. She craned her head back, to try to see what was happening. The woman didn’t appear to have any weapons on her.
"How does she keep doing that?"
"Psi-bursts. We have to avoid getting hit by one of those. In addition to the physical damage they cause, they can severely disrupt neural pathways."
He yanked around a corner leading into a dimly lit corridor and gripped her shoulders tightly, staring down at her. "Ema Leone. Listen to me. You must hide. She's targeting you. If we continue to move randomly, it increases our chances of being hit by one of her attacks. I'll attempt to help Caleb draw her away. You should try to find a way to safely leave the building."
"You’re letting me go?"
He smiled wryly. "We have reinforcements on the way. One of our comrades will find you and pick you up."
Not if I get a say in that.
"Be safe, Ema."
