SHHG! Episode 26: Snape Accuracy

Mockingjay Act 1

We're back to it! We discuss act one of Mockingjay, a book that dares to ask: is filming wrestling promos just as bad as running a dystopian fiefdom? The people cry out for a teenage superhero to jump out in front of a smoke machine and say character select screen phrases, and only Katniss can answer the call.

We discuss the loaded imagery and its relationship to the more heightened plot movements, whether or not we care about the love triangle anymore, and ponder whether this is about anything specific or if the series has just gotten too far into the reality TV weeds. We also check in on a brand new Harry Potter fan subreddit dedicated to complaining about the TV show that doesn't exist yet.

Comments

Sorry if this is random but did you get introduced to this podcast through the TazCJ subreddit like I did, back in graduation era?? I went from TAZ on repeat to Shack on repeat personally lol

Little guy

If they did the Snow book/film they also have a good third segment spot with the think pieces going around about how Susan Collins should have considered if it was RESPONSIBLE to write a Snow book where he's so hot and appealing.

DJ

I have never seen any of the movies past the first one and I read mockingjay when it came out a billion years ago. The entirety of my memory for the book is my distaste for the ending. Rereading has been interesting for what jogs and doesn’t jog my memory, and most of act 1 didn’t return. I do think we get some fun “katniss-isms” like her calling the camera team insects and befriending Boggs after the Finnick incident. I really hope that you guys do the Snow book because it is SOOOOO much more exciting than this, with a hugely active evil gentleman protagonist that drives the narrative. I didn’t realize how exciting it was until I was comparing to this again lol.

Julie Lerche

Yeah it's not so much in the first act, but that's why they're hijacking the Capitol broadcast instead of just filming propaganda pieces for District 13.

Jolene Blake

Oh, interesting--there wasn't much of that in what we read, but perhaps it'll come up more later on?

The Shrieking Shack

I do remember fans not liking this third book, so I'm interested to see if they are secretly right like the HP7 leak readers or if it went over everyone's heads. IMHO based on this first part they sound very valid.

DJ

I don't really remember how that plays out in practice, though.

Jolene Blake

So it has been years since I read this but my understanding is that the whole Mockingjay mascot thing is more about pushing the other districts into rising up, rather than motivating District 13's soldiers? So I think the "she's agreed to be the Mockingjay" bit makes some sense from that perspective - Coin isn't saying "your hero is here", she's saying "we now have a propaganda piece we can use to get everyone else on side".

Jolene Blake

Wait, I might be misreading you. I assumed you meant that District 13 are the heroic but flawed Americans. Is that what you meant?

Ryan

Remembering the conversation about what District 13 wants is the reason I could never take the claims that Hunger Games was a radical critique of American society seriously. The “good” alternative is contemporary American society. A lot of dystopian fiction is kind of conservative in that way, the message being “isn’t our current society good compared to this”.

Ryan

In the trailer for the recent prequel movie, I spotted a piece of Capitol propaganda art that is clearly modeled on Socialist Realist Soviet propaganda posters. They’re still doing it!

Ryan

district 13’s lack of ideology /could/ be something interesting: decades of siege mentality grinding away actual ideals until the only things left are “survive and fuck the Capitol”. but given the lack of talking about that and the rest of the books so far, I do not think there was actual intent there!

TJ Guiney

DYING to know what the hunger games imagines landscape is like… what are they Imagining in there… imagine a friday night fish fry with finnick, perhaps???

cml

And I'm part of the problem because I'm mad Paramount casted Keanu over Robert Pattinson

Kzinssie

Going from reading 80,000 posts about the minutae of Shadow the Hedgehog's characterization in this, the Fearless Year of Shadow, to that Snape post is going to make me go insane. Every fandom with an edgy guy is exactly the same about that guy

Kzinssie

You were in book 2 wondering what the series is saying about the capitol's culpability, so I was surprised when you didn't say something about Katniss infantilizing her tortured team by saying to Gale, that they're like babies not knowing what they're doing.

ZiggyWSB .

I've recently seen a post on Tumblr under the Tag HP-Critical. It was about how a Marauder-Show would be boring and a bad idea. But before I had hope in the post it said, that we need instead a show that fleshes out Snape and the Slytherins more. I felt like I got Shriekcast-Bit-Bingo. The Tag was generally disappointing and always about how JKR was too mean to Slytherin and the dark arts.

ZiggyWSB .

Oh no! The politics of this revolutionary faction is The Phantom Menace

A sudden absence of bees

sooooo extremely excited for mockingjay coverage & very satisfying to know that the confusion teen-me had about the absurd politics of this book still stands

isawiitch

Yeah. Obviously we'll see, we're only a third in, but I am sort of fascinated by this series' obsession with recognizing propaganda and trust next to the very credulous way it regurgitates every company line from the Cold War

The Shrieking Shack

There's something about the way that District 13 is written that sniffs of someone who is 'critical' of America's foreign actions but also still fully believes 99% of all propaganda that gets put out. Like yeah America is oppressing people and using a heavily controlled media culture to manufacture consent for its atrocities and that's bad but its also absolutely true that Russia/North Korea/Cuba are a bunch of evil commies that brainwash their citizens into loving their regime and the only reason we can't do 'something' about them is because they have nukes too! Also the idea that Peeta is going to get werewolfed as a punishment for Katniss is an Extremely funny idea. Oh nooooooo it would really suck if the capital turned my boring nagging boyfriend into a huge cool werewolf. That would be terrrrrrible

Shift

WAIT WAIT HOLD ON I POSTED MY COMMENT TOO SOON I'M 7 MINUTES IN AND THIS IS THE FUNNIEST SHIT I'VE EVER HEARD I'm gonna start a campaign to get the Shriekcast featured on an episode of Guys so help me God but I'm worried it'll ruin the delicate ecosystem of the subreddits

Lambda

Thus are we blessed mid-way through the week.

David

For the record I think I know exactly what title your Act 2 episode is going to have but I'm gonna put it through the ROT13 cipher so I can call my shot without any spoilers Gur gvgyr bs gur rcvfbqr jvyy or gur ahg

Lambda

Been listening from the beginning during the hiatus, paused the Emma Watson drive thru fanfic episode for this… possibly the only thing that could pull me away from that beautiful story ❤️
