If it comes to sport animes with amazing story and character development i'm really surprised nobody has mention Major which arguably has the most development on a cast of characters spawning decades

I might get flak for this but Ahiru no Sora is starting to get pretty good too as a basketball anime. Right now they are 32 episodes in and its slow in getting the team together but I enjoy the story and emotion that it brings.

Kuroko is bball w superpowers. I don't think it's at the level of Haikyuu. A more character development-focused sports anime would be Ace of Diamond.

As far as sports anime are concerned you can't go wrong with Hajime no Ippo, it's a much older series about Boxing so the first part of the show is a very old style of animation (that still looks really good to be fair).
There's also Kuroko's basketball, which is enjoyable but you should go in knowing that it's basically the love child of dragonball Z and a basketball show.
Ace of the Diamond is more grounded to reality similar to Haikyuu (though neither are completely grounded), but is still very enjoyable despite it's much slower pacing.
Run with the wind is a very recent show about running, with the characters all being on a track team.
A pet favorite of mine that isn't nearly as popular is Baby Steps, it's also a more grounded show about Tennis.
There's an extremely large amount of sports anime out there so dive in to it.

Slam dunk, hajime no ippo and kuroko no basket are some of those S tier animes. Slam dunk helped me get into basketball and got me really good at it.

Yo, you need to check out Run with the Wind at some point. It’s only the one season but it’s really good and carries a lot of sentiments that Haikyuu does as well.
