Who is your under the radar team to squeeze in a postseason spot and maybe make a run this October?

Jonathan Morales

What do you think about the relationship between the pitch clock and pitcher injuries?

mahlen

Hey bailey, I have a few Reds and Foolish 50 themed questions: 1) You had talked about luis castillo being narrowly left off of the foolish 50 this year and I was curious what factors are keeping him off the list 2) How do you view Joey Votto’s HOF case when he eventually ends up on the ballot (i.e. 1st ballot, 5th ballot, etc) and who would be a good example of his sort of profile to look at from the past and 3) There weren’t any Reds on this years foolish 50 and I would be curious to know who you would choose if you had to pick one

Braden

Foolish, I finally read Lords of the Realm and loved it. My question: have John Fisher’s antics been the most embarrassing to the lords at large and the league? For as much as Charlie O embarrassed the A’s and the league, at least he built a winner and was a great showman. John Fisher just seems like a genuinely dumb person.

ZVN

Who are your all-time favorite players from the Negro Leagues?

Graham Hillmann

Lou Varland was on a recent episode of Chris Paddack’s podcast and one of the things they discussed was their shared experience of coming out of the bullpen for the first time late last year. They agreed that one of the benefits to that experience was learning that you don’t need to be working yourself into a mental lather for four days to be successful on the mound, you can make your pitches and get good outs with a much shorter mental build-up. Do you think that the mystique of starters (you don’t talk to them on start days, etc) might actually be getting in the way of mental performance? Maybe it would be better to treat a start day like just another day at the office instead of this massive deal.

If you had to make a feature length baseball movie about a subject that has not been focused on yet, what would be your pick?

Brandon Perez

Who won the 2021 World Series?

Burt Oldirty

Hello from Australia Foolish, my first time participating in the joyous Q&A so I've got a few small questions: -What are your thoughts on players like Terrance Gore? Bench guys who pinch run and maybe score high in Vibes+. T Gore has more World Series rings than career RBI's, fraud or unknown chad? -Can you recommend a good evergreen style Baseball book? I've only read Athletic articles so would love to read more quality pieces of work -Whats your baseball viewing schedule like at this time of year? Warm Regards

Luca G

Juan Soto had an OBP of .500 over the last 100 games of the 2021 season. Do you think he’ll ever do it over a full season, becoming the first to do so (clean) since 1958? [Bonus Trivia: name the two guys in 58 that did it]

Brady

Help me settle a debate. How would you define the term “dirty inning”?

thefuturenow

Early thoughts on the Cardinals and Diamondbacks? Very different approach the getting new starting pitchers during the off season.

Seán Meehan

What are your feelings toward the expanded playoffs we've seen in recent years? With it being generally understood that baseball is inherently more random than some other sports, do you like that October can now be more chaotic with 12 teams having a chance, or would you like to see the regular season matter more in terms of who can win it all?

Theo

Who do you think is the best pitcher to never win a Cy Young award not named Nolan Ryan. Not including pitchers from before 1956 because there was no award to win. Personally I think Chris Sale is the best out of the current era of pitchers without a Cy Young award

Sam Holtz

Also I know we’re only allowed one question but what is the most recent hat you purchased/acquired

Jeremy Jones

Hi Foolish happy baseball season. Of the MLB free agents who wanted big deal and took short term contracts (Belli Montgomery Chapman Snell) who got the best deals and who got the worst deal? Follow up, who is the “blame” for these guys getting shafted, themselves agents teams or THE MARKET

Jeremy Jones

What's your favourite wacky abbreviation in baseball? Mine's gotta be the TOOTBLAN

Dan Russell

This is the best question I've ever seen on one of these posts

Dan Russell

Kind of a weird question, but don’t you think the OPS+ formula should divide by two instead of subtracting 100? This would give an actually accurate representation of how good a player is compared league average(% wise) which would not only eliminate the wonky negative OPS+s but would generally help people better understand how similarly good hitters are to each other.

Phil Caldwell

Hi Bailey, what is the position-advanced defensive metric combo you put the most stock in, and the one you put the least stock in? (Example: centerfield/OAA, catcher/fWAR)

nick podd

Thanks for listing those! I've read the first and last, but not Future Value. Hopefully Bailey will give us some more this time around. :)

Alexander Abbott

I've heard great things about The Arm, but haven't read it yet. Thanks!

Alexander Abbott

Baseball websites/pages power rankings? Thinking stats/journalism/YT channels/etc

Bo Brown

Also not Bailey, but in a previous Q&A he recommended these: The Only Rule is it Has to Work by Sam Miller and Ben Lindbergh Future Value by Eric Longenhagen, Keith Law, and Kiley McDaniel Veeck as in Wreck by Bill Veeck

Zach Morochnik

What are your favorite/least favorite statistical anomalies from the 2020 season? Outcome metrics were obviously all over the place, but despite the smaller sample were the more 'under the hood' numbers from that season still good predictors for 2021?

Fred Rio

Hello hello foolish how do I convince others that Scott Boras is a labor hero and not some greedy villain? Or are those guys already lost?

Harper-Leighton Scott

Hey Bailey! What do you think about the Dylan Cease trade? Being a Padres fan, I personally really disliked it. What would you say the best case, worse case, and most probable case scenarios could be for how this trade ends (not including injuries)?

Francis Alipranti

If you could design your perfect playoffs, what would it be? Lower seeds in round one must with one, but favorites win two one for example? More teams, less teams? Etc.

Paul Bauer

I'm not Bailey but for a sports book, I would recommend The Arm by Jeff Passan if you haven't read it already. It's a deep dive into the Tommy John surgery, going from the medical procedure to the politics of teenagers getting it early to get a couple mph on their fastballs. It's a great read and some of the stories in there are unbelievable. If I ever were able to have a Q&A with Jeff Passan, I would ask him what chapters would be changed/added if he were to write the book now compared to when he wrote it in 2016.

Richard Rodriguez

With the rule changes last year to bring speed back into the game (bases getting larger, limiting throws to first, etc), we've seen an explosion of stolen bases. Are there any players where this change added a speed element to their game that wasn't there before? Sure the fast guys got more stolen bases but I'm wondering if there are players who rarely stole that are now getting double-digit steals.

Richard Rodriguez

How do guest appearances on other shows work? Are they scheduled? Contracted? Do they just randomly happen? Is there compensation? Just a curiosity.

Joey Killmer

Have you ever played Fallout 4 and if so, who would be the best player in the version of baseball that Moe Cronin describes?

Harrison Bosque

Has the right on right change-up made a resurgence in baseball? For the Astros specifically, Valdez, Javier, and Blanco have added it and the returns on stuff+ are great.

Michael Luker

Hey, Bailey! Just wanted to say thank you for doing this kind of thing. You are a great person to follow for baseball content, and I appreciate all the work that you do! I want to hear you talk about books and reading. I would love for you to recommend three books that you really enjoy or enjoyed...bonus points if one of them is related to sports. And, if you feel like it, tell us one book that you don't recommend. Thanks again for everything you do!

Alexander Abbott

Hi Bailey, hope you are well. Switch hitters are interesting and fun to have in the game, but sometimes it can seem like a bit of a gimmick that the media/front offices will bring up to talk about a player. Does WAR or any other advanced metric add anything to a player if they are able to switch hit? In addition, would a player like Aaron Judge or Mike Trout gain any additional value if they suddenly learned to switch hit, but their L/R splits remained the same?

Tristan Morgan

How do you think deferred money will affect the landscape of free agency and payrolls going forward?

Allen Gary

i'm sorry but how is this a question? dude bet on his own team as manager. *even* if Ohtani placed these huge bets on other sports, it's not even close to the same

Paul Sporer

Let's say Ohtani stays with the Dodgers until retirement - what is the best the rest of his career could play out while still seeing him enshrined into the hall of fame wearing an Angels cap?

Leo Thomas

If MLB wanted to copy the NBA’s in season tournament, what would be the most feasible way to do it?

G

you must survive 2 weeks trapped inside an MLB stadium during the offseason, and you must subsist only on what you can scavenge within the stadium, which ballpark do you think gives you the best odds of survival? also imagine for a minute if all the players wore really short shorts on the field at all times, i think that would be really cool

bobby witt jr truther

I have taken on your advice regarding the ‘she blank on my blank till I blank’ format, specifically using Dom Canzone and I would like some feedback. ‘She smothers me with her chest, call that Domming with her Canzone’ Keeping on a dominating theme if you are into that kind of thing, I also thought of ‘Call her Phil Niekro the way she knuckles my balls’. I do have an actual question this time, Pedro Astacio had a 5.9 fWAR - 5.04 ERA (115 ERA+) season in 1999 with the Rockies and it’s sort of the inverse of Dante Bichette’s 1999 with good counting stats but a negative WAR, what’s the ‘worst’ good season and ‘best’ bad season you can find? (Using Stathead with code ‘Foolish20’).

Chris Waind

How impactful/valuable are hitters that see a lot pitches per ab on average?

Should Pete Rose get into the Hall now that MLB is scrambling to protect their biggest star?

Which Atlanta pitcher do you think will exceed expectations?

What is one baseball related and one non baseball related thing that is on your bucket list?

Evan A

Does Carson Kelly have enough of a body of work for me to credibly believe he's a Comeback Player of the Year candidate? Or do we call it a "breakout" if he goes on to have a strong season?

Carl Mizell

Thoughts on the conspiracy that the A’s sent Esteury Ruiz to AAA Las Vegas for wearing a “Last Dive Bar” bracelet?

Joshua Watkin

Did Andrew Bailey already fix the Red Sox rotation

Nicole CD

While it’s a nice thought experiment to reset your expected run value at a plate appearance level, your total expected runs for the game would still decrease as your team would have less outs to give, so no, this would not behoove you (in a vacuum).

Maxwell Bach

Baseball is on the rise and I think people like yourself are definitely in part to thank, but what's something the league isn't doing that you think would grow the game more than anything? Do you still stand by the "weekday games should be free" take?

Robert Matheson

What are your thoughts on the Braves' 2 big off-season acquisitions (Sale & Kelenic)? It looks like Sale will pitch well, but do you think there's a solid chance he stays healthy? And with Kelenic's alleged swing changes, do you think he hits for solid offense?

Lane Estes

Whats the best performance by a player in the only career game the player played for that team?

Henson Burk-Fawcett

I run a fantasy league 10T H2H 5x5 Categories. Hitting: R, TB, RBI, SBN, OBP Pitching: IP, K, ERA, WHIP, SVHD 2 Divisions such that 5 teams draft NL Only and 5 teams draft AL Only before the full league is integrated and any MLB player is eligible to be added to any roster. Here’s my question: is Foolish Baseball or Foolish Bailey your main channel?

Maxwell Bach

What are your thoughts on the Cubs? It feels like they have NLCS upside, yet I can also see them missing the playoffs entirely.

Nelson Chen

What is your dark horse team for the season/who do you think will overperform public perception the most this season?

genderdruid

That's a fun question, I wonder if that's a stat you can search for? What's the on base percentage for batters who go get counts reset vs "normal" at bats, and then narrow down to vs the same pitcher in those two instances, if the count was pitcher favored before being reset, etc

James A

If you could bring on a player to discuss any one of their seasons in baseball, dead or alive. Who would it be?

YoungPhillyKing

Hey Foolish! Kind of a hyper-specific question, but are there any “old-school” counting stats that you think trounce analytics, or at least give you pause? For example, I believe that WAR is king, but there’s an uphill battle for me if players don’t end their careers with 2,000+ hits/strikeouts.

Gaermph

If the Hall of Very Good existed, who would you argue deserves to be inducted? I'm talking borderline cases between Good and Very Good.

Ryan McGovern

I was thinking about your count video as I was playing Road to the Show and a question occurred to me that probably sounds dumb: is it ever a positive value play to get yourself thrown out on the basepaths to end an inning and reset the count for your teammate? Say I'm the #3 hitter and I reach on a walk with 2 outs in the 1st, then the #4 hitter goes down 0-2. If I do nothing, the odds are incredibly high that he'll make an out and we won't score, but if I surrender myself to become the third out, the cleanup hitter will get to lead off the next inning with a fresh count and some firsthand knowledge of the pitcher's stuff/sequencing, essentially rerolling the at-bat. Would this ever be considered a good enough play to be worth more runs than it costs, or is giving up an out such a no-no that it's a non-starter? I'll hang up and listen.

Eli Powell

What do you think of major league teams turning to the streaming model for broadcasting? I hadn't kept up with baseball for a while due to not having cable, but the DBacks being fully available online as of last summer got me to start watching again. It seems like a win for my case but I know some teams would be expecting to take a big revenue cut by moving away from cable deals

James A

Did you have a background in data science (or some related field)? I’m interested to see how you got into the numbers side of sports.

Jonathan Roe

Gut feeling what is Seager's slash line at the end of the season and with how many homers
