Thebes had a place that nowadays we may call a "Gay district". It really wasn't what you think, but it's where male couples met, this is where this short comic part is set.
This part of Thebes, outside the city walls, was like a big park. A monument of the children of Hercules by Megara; the stone called Sophronister, was a place of pilgrimage together with Iolaus tomb, nearby there was a temple of Apollo. Iolaus tomb was in a small temple here, (Iolaus was Heracles/Hercules apprentice and lover) and gay couples usually made a religious union in there; it was not marriage, but it's close to what we mean with marriage nowadays: an oath of eternal love. A stream crossed the nearby forest, usually boys washed themselves there to be watched by warriors. There also was a hippodrome dedicated to Heracles, a very small gymnasium dedicated to male couples, mostly adults and not masters/apprentices, where they could train. 💘
