Below are the extra vocabulary that I want to teach you guys:

1. ทำมาหากินที่นี่  (tam maa hăa gin têe nêe)

Definition: make a living, earn a livelihood

example:

- มีคนทำมาหากินที่นี่
mee kon tam maa hăa gin têe nêe
There are people who live and earn a livelihood here.

- ผมไปทำมาหากินอยู่ที่อเมริกามาสิบกว่าปี
pŏm bpai tam maa hăa gin yòo têe à-may-rí-gaa maa sìp gwàa bpee
I lived and worked in America for more than 10 years.

2. บึง (beung) is often translated to "swamp" in English. The image of the "swamp", in English, is where the land is covered in water and dominated by trees and woody, green vegetation. And that is also correct for บึง (beung) in Thai. However, many times what looks like a lake for English speakers can also be called บึง (beung) in Thai.

Thai people like to call small swamps "หนองน้ำ" (nŏng náam), a big swamps or small-medium size lakes "บึง" (beung) and huge size lakes "ทะเลสาบ" (tá-lay sàap).

3.ใช้ชีวิต chái chee-wít

Definition: to live (a life)

example:

ใช้ชีวิตอย่างสงบสุขที่ประเทศไทย
chái chee-wít yàang sà-ngòp sùk têe bprà-têt tai
Live a calm and peaceful life in Thailand.

4. หาเช้ากินค่ำ (hăa cháo gin kâm) = Literally: Earn/find morning, eat night. The equivalent in English is "to live from hand to mouth". It means having a difficult time working, not earning a lot, and having just enough money to cover one's basic expenses without being able to save or plan for the future.

example:

เด็กๆที่พ่อแม่หาเช้ากินค่ำมักไม่มีโอกาสในชีวิต
dèk dèk têe pôr mâe hăa cháo gin kâm mák mâi mee oh-gàat nai chee-wít
Kids whose parents live from hand to mouth usually don't have an opportunity in life.

5. อยู่ไปวันๆ (yòo bpai wan wan) = To live day by day. To not plan for the future.

example:

อย่าอยู่ไปวันๆสิ ต้องรู้จักวางแผนชีวิตด้วย
yàa yòo bpai wan wan sì · dtông róo jàk waang păen chee-wít dûuay
Don't live day by day, you need to know how to plan your life as well.
