Now my favorites are more like Nightwhish, Dream Theater and EPICA. I would love to see your rection of the complete Album The Astonishing from Dream Theater. Saw them in Frankfurt last year, was wonderful. Did you alredy do this or is it on your list (at which position :-) ).

Especially bands like Maiden, Priest and Metallica who go beyond your standard minor/blues scales and incorporate these neoclassical flourishes like diminished chords and line cliches. You're the best at spotting that stuff and calling it out right away. Has helped my own songwriting and ear training tremendously as well!

We're in an apartment, though, and I have to be careful as to when and how often I can play it loud. And, when I'm recording an episode, it's good to only have my spoken audio present for the microphone...it makes for a better product.

Classic prog was composed for big woofers. For example, on headphones you would never guess that the "heartbeat" at the start of Dark Side of the Moon is a very low note turning on and off. I know this because it was the resonant frequency of my brick dormitory building. When we played it on the 15" woofers, the building would shake: on, off, on, off. So yes, good for you listening on vinyl. At least be aware that these works were composed for 20 minute album sides. But if you're missing the bottom octave, you're missing half the fun.

On a serious note, I've watched all the live-action Star Trek reboots and the only one that is closest and truest to the optimism the original Star Trek embodied is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's fun, you care about the ship members, and right from the start Captain Pike is faced with catch-22 moral dilemma between tribes in a distant world, and off they go. PS BTW the show is good and Anson Mount is a great Captain Pike. I'd say a mix between Shatner's Kirk (sans libido lol) and Stewart's Picard...and it works well, really well. I hope you get to see it, you'll feel like you first felt when watching TNG only that this takes place many years earlier

Keith Emerson is one of my all time favourites, such a humble person with unfortunately a tragic end of his life. Anyway this was also a great example of classic works redone right and your comments of Aaron Coplands reaction were a good addition here. Also got a thought that this is actually quite an interesting category, proge/rock bands understanding what the original work was about and just just picking the melody line. When thinking about similar versions Sky's version of Toccata came to mind ( see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgbgUrp1a70 ). The Nice has also done Karelia Suite by Sibelius and there are some clips of that.

I'm referring to "When The Levee Breaks." You have the original Memphis Minnie version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5VmVvsjyKw), and then, of course, the infamous Led Zeppelin version from the ZOSO album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5VmVvsjyKw). But there's a third version I find fascinating because it is (in my view) an incredible reimagining of the song, performed by A Perfect Circle (live version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXYieA0tGqE). I'm just curious your thoughts about songs that are so completely reimagined. Keep up the good work!

The film music composer Hans Zimmer used one of Schulze's pieces as part of his score for the movie Dune (2021), and described his work as “the perfect balance between the soul and technology”.29 Apr 2022 Maybe one day Doug will catch up with someone else who dies around the same time as Vangelis and Alan White. eend note Schulze’s impact was recently heard in the film “Dune,” interpolated into the score by an admirer, Hans Zimmer. “When I was writing the end titles, I realized there was a bass line that I’d heard before,” Zimmer told Den of Geek when the film was coming out. “And I suddenly remembered that Klaus Schulze wrote a song called ‘Frank Herbert.’ I basically lifted the bass line from that. So I phoned Klaus and asked him, could we make this a co-composition? But he was quite thrilled that something he wrote so many years ago still echoed into this century.” Sequencers are beautiful

I 100% and more love everything Doug, but sadly have to take a temporary hiatus from Patreon for (hopefully) a short period while I sort out some deteriorating business related matters. I WILL be back after I've got retirement matters finalised which will restore a very welcome stability and reliability to my personal finances. Keep up the amazing work and I'll catch you retrospectively on you tube for sure in the meantime.

I joined this channel after seeing your post about the BS concerning your last attempt at loading a video. I live on YouTube, and I have seen many first reaction channels not have any problems, and a handful that quit because no matter what they did they could not get their content on... IT IS BS!!!! I do have two requests for your consideration to analyze. The first is Leonid and Friends, (They are the Russian and Ukranian Chicago/Earth Wind and Fire, cover band) They composed an original song called The Speck of Dust. The second is by the late 70's super prog group U.K. The song is Dead of Night (Suite : Dead of Night/By the Light of Day/Presto Vivace and Reprise) Doug, this is 13:07 of Mind blowing prog, that changed by life,, literally. Doug, keep up the great work my friend! I look forward to getting to know you and the other other members of The Council of Dougs! Sounds like a blast!!
