POLL: Pick the next Extended Play Lounge Episode
Added 2025-02-01 17:34:00 +0000 UTCFor this next EPL, I'm asking you to choose from these solo albums by musicians more known for the work in classic bands. I'm quite interested in all of these...which one should I get to first?

Funny you mention that, I was at that Roxy show! It was... interesting. It was almost entirely improvised.

2025-02-03 03:47:47 +0000 UTCBruford's solo work features an elite super group, with the music co-composed by keyboardist, Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health). This group toured and several live videos exist. Moraz's album is also excellent; however, it's more of a studio project. (Not sure Moraz's project did any live gigs.)

2025-02-02 22:46:50 +0000 UTCI was visiting my older brother and wife in LA when Bruford and Moraz were touring with "Music for Piano and Drums" and they were at the Roxy while I there. Sadly, I had no idea who they were at the time. D'oh!

2025-02-02 21:17:20 +0000 UTCI said the same thing. All these choices are... choice.

2025-02-02 21:15:11 +0000 UTCHey, this is a difficult vote for me as well, except for one candidate - Roger Walter's Amused to Death. Anything from Roger Waters has been a problem for me because it sounds like he is complaining about something or anything. Pink Floyd's The Final Cut was what really turned me off of his output. I had actually bought the album several years back and then after a month or two, went to a reseller to get some money back. For me, I have always enjoyed music that has concepts that are broad enough for anyone to understand and comes to a resolution. Examples are The Moody Blues' Days Of Future Passed, Rush's Permanent Waves, APP's I Robot, and so on. But when there's a lot of complaining without any kind of resolution, especially meaningful, that is when I get turned off by it. Unfortunately, Roger's solo output, and The Final Cut is to me that kind of music. If Amused to Death gets chosen and played, I will try to give it fair listen but I do have my reservations. Pardon my complaining, lol, I guess I find that Mr. Walters gets me going in the worst way.

2025-02-02 18:50:09 +0000 UTCI love Rick Wakeman. Iβve listened to Journey to the Center of the Earth almost since it was released. Itβs great!

2025-02-02 17:13:59 +0000 UTCBill Bruford hits one out of the park with this one.

2025-02-02 15:12:05 +0000 UTCHi Doug, The Story of I is by far the most interesting and varied musically on the list but should Rick Wakeman win then please, please choose the original live performance recording from 1974 with the London Symphony Orchestra. Rick has recorded several but inferior versions since that original performance. Please also be aware there are some very poor quality audio uploads of this piece on YouTube and the YouTube link in your Master List doesn't work for me. This one appears ok for audio quality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HVDIPmbCnE

2025-02-02 12:50:09 +0000 UTCDoesn't look like Ant Phillips will make it - anyway I hope for consideration in the future. Rick Wakeman (according to Keith Emerson "real competition") isn't the worst alternative to live with for the moment ;)

2025-02-02 12:00:10 +0000 UTCTotally agree it MUST be the original album. Even though there are issues here and there, only the original album has the magic. In part, it might be because RW lost the original score and had to rewrite it from scratch for the new recording (while the original involved 2 other arrangers in addition to RW), or just because of the atmosphere in the Royal Festival Hall for the concert when excitement about RW was at it's zenith. In any case, that's the only recording to listen to.

2025-02-01 23:38:36 +0000 UTCYikes!! I have very strong feelings about four of these! How can I possibly choose??!!?!
Bill Brinkmoeller
2025-02-01 22:10:22 +0000 UTCAnthony Phillips is a must for the channel. Especially this album.
John Osgood
2025-02-01 21:57:13 +0000 UTCLove Jeff Beckβs guitar work on this album. Iβve always considered this a better Pink Floyd album than anything the band did without Roger.
Richard Plante
2025-02-01 21:11:57 +0000 UTCCompletely agree!π

2025-02-01 20:56:43 +0000 UTCMe too. One of the first albums I bought as a spotty teenager back in the day. Had to hide it from my friends who were all into Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Purple etc. πdefinitely the original live recording.
Chris Gadsby
2025-02-01 20:48:29 +0000 UTCAnt is EXTREMELY underrated. I love his original guitar solo on The Knife
Frankie Cerniglia
2025-02-01 19:52:40 +0000 UTCSeeing both Bruford and Moraz on here reminds me that the first of their two collaborations, Music for Piano and Drums, is a really fascinating and one-of-a-kind thing. Doug, I bet you'd enjoy it quite a lot!
Jake Vogt
2025-02-01 19:30:15 +0000 UTCBruford's solo discography is tragically underappreciated. Great stuff.
Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)
2025-02-01 19:20:53 +0000 UTCThat said; Doug, if you read this and JTTCOTE wins, it MUST be the original live album from 1974. The production is magnificent, even the dropped trumpet notes. Wakeman did a studio recording a few years ago, but it falls flat. The original is alive and electric.

2025-02-01 18:38:06 +0000 UTCThis Patreon/Discord group of people is very interesting. They love King Crimson - but won't vote for Adrian Belew solo albums - yet will vote for Rick Wakeman. I don't get it.
Robert Thornton
2025-02-01 18:37:54 +0000 UTCOh, dear Lort! ALL OF THEM! That said, JTTCOTE was my gateway drug into music. ANY music. Yeah, I listened to the radio, but this album grabbed me by the lapels, shook vigorously and screamed "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!" in my face. It was beyond a pivotal moment in so many ways.
Tom (the soggy one)
2025-02-01 18:33:41 +0000 UTCThe original Journey album is fantastic and the orchestrations are rich and melodic. Amazing how the music and story fit together. The crowd were red hot too
Si
2025-02-01 18:24:52 +0000 UTCOne of a Kind is such a great album. Amused to Death has great moments but also a lot of typical Waters babbling.
Mark
2025-02-01 18:03:15 +0000 UTCCannot believe Moraz is least popular!. I like Rick, but Moraz is so much more eclectic, and the Story of I is superb
Mark Duffill
2025-02-01 18:00:27 +0000 UTCI was just listening to Journey to the Centre of the Earth thinking I'd love to see you do a video on it! Make sure you do the concert film!
Ian Swank
2025-02-01 17:58:56 +0000 UTCI'd be happy with any of the middle three, which I have copies of. But if Bill wins, very happy with that as I have never heard this album. Not interested in Waters - afraid I can no longer separate his music from his politics and opinions - he's just made it too hard for me to see through all that
Adrian Goodrich
2025-02-01 17:46:11 +0000 UTCProbably Waters' best solo album. The lyrics are profound even though the music doesn't blow me away.
Jay
2025-02-01 17:44:14 +0000 UTCDoug ... they are all amazing...please do them all eventually.
Paul Hoyle
2025-02-01 17:40:44 +0000 UTCAll great albums, but I think you'll especially enjoy the orchestration and chorus on "Journey".
Kevin Barrett
2025-02-01 17:40:26 +0000 UTCOut of all these "The Geese & The Ghost" is my best-loved...and probably is the most beautiful musically speaking. "One of a Kind" is probably Bruford's best and would be 2nd choice, and after that Patrick Moraz, that's an interesting album.
Ralph Darvill
2025-02-01 17:39:24 +0000 UTCI voted for Bill Bruford, but for what it's worth, I have heard that the Roger Waters album is sometimes used to test new audiophile stereo equipment
