Doug on Demand - Episode 24

Comments

I have the same comment with another Rock to Classical translation. I have a cd of the London Symphony Orchestra performing the music of Genesis. While most of the interpretation is well done, primarily because the music of Genesis is already lyrical, there are some songs that do not translate well. Turn It On Again and I Know What I Like are great as Prog Rock songs, but do not belong in Classical.

Oh, man! Jane's Addiction's Three Days is such an amazing track.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

My main complaint with orchestral versions of rock songs is...somewhat unimaginative scoring (i.e., big brass for big guitar, etc.). I also kinda think it's a bad cheat to use rock bass, drums, and guitar...also because, the thing that makes a good rock band work is the individual styles of the folks playing the bass and drums. So just throwing in a generic drummer and bass player tends to ruin the flavor. I'd probably rather hear an orchestration that works within the general confines of an orchestra. I mean, I am not an orchestrator, and I fully can imagine that it must be a huge challenge. In any event...someone should do it with King Crimson stuff. I once heard a string ensemble arrangement of '90s-era Crimson...and it was fabulous. Very Bartok.
