Mario Duplantier is an absolute beast of a drummer and pours so much of himself into his playing. On top of more Gojira in general, I highly, highly recommend checking out some of his drum solos he's posted on his Youtube channel. I think Lotus Eater is probably the best example of what Opeth is capable of condensed down into one song. The studio version of Closure has one of my favorite outros from Opeth but I also love what they did with it for the live performance on Lamentations and I highly recommend checking it out. Lamentations was their first live album release and contains both sets from their performance at Shepherd's Bush in 2003. The first set was a "soft" set where they played all of Damnation as well as Harvest from Blackwater Park. The second set was the "heavy" one of the night containing many of the songs they typically had on their setlist around that time.

Octavio Stenberg

I surprised that no one has mentioned the earlier Fates Warning masterpiece A Pleasant Shade of Gray. I would love an entire play through.

Aaron E Austin

This is not really my thing, but there was some great stuff here. I guess it says a lot that my stand out favorite was Fireball (which I loved when it came out!)

Adie

"It's like punk metal to me". I think you just described nu metal. :)
