The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 93

After a very close poll, I'm pleased to present my first-time listen and reaction to Are You Experienced, the debut album from The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Of course, I had heard a handful of these songs before, but many were new to me...and this was my first opportunity to hear the entire album!

We've got 17 songs over (basically) 3 album sides, and they're all great and historic. Come along for a fun ride!

Comments

Interestingly, Jimi didn't like the sound of his voice. He just didn't trust anyone else to sing his songs.

Jimi doesn't read music, silly. No chafing there. It's just sound for him.

I started listening to Hendrix in the mid 70s, at first it was his guitar work that I liked, then his wordsmithery, and the more sensitive playing that he was most capable of. Also Mitch's drumming. I really liked the second incarnation of The experience, with Mitch and Billy Cox on Bass, Hendrix seemed to be going in a funkier soulful phase. Just what could have been had he not inadvertently overdosed. One thing that puzzled me about the re-released extended version of AYE, was the amount of echo on the vocal for Love Or Confusion, I didn't remember that from the 70s vinyl I had. To my ears it spoilt the track. Apparently the original UK AYE was a mono recording. The later US vinyl was remixed for Stereo, and I believe that's where the echo/reverb comes in. Also I have the intl./UK version of the extended CD with the original UK track listing. The version of Red House on that release is how I remembered it, the original UK mono mix, the version on the US release sounds so different, and reading into this it was recorded later in the US in 67 and in Stereo. It sounds so different, different guitar and all that vocal echo/reverb.

I enjoyed the back story and the rich history of this album. I came for the reaction and walked away with a bit of knowledge I didn't have before.
