METAL MAY - Fan Favorites Episode 26

You definitely need to do an Extended Play Lounge for the LTE album...Going from Paradigm Shift to OSMOSIS. Osmosis is SO good. And then Kindred Spirits!!!! Don't forget Universal Mind! What an album.

First off, I'm glad that Megan is getting better, and continues to do so. Maybe it will give her a boost to know that, while her Fan Favorites picks are always great, this one was unbelievably magnificent! Wow! Devin shows how something really big can be built out of something simple. Thanks, Megan for that lump in my throat. I could talk your arm off about Level 5, but I won't. In that incarnation of Crim, Gavin Harrison arranged the drum parts among himself, Bill Rieflin, and Pat Mastelotto, with each of them playing one component of the whole drum part. In the percussion part, Gavin is playing in 11 while Pat is playing in 7.

Hey Doug - Evolution (Grand Design) was actually the second song in the setlist when we saw SymphonyX at the Keswick in '22! It was just as awesome then as it is on the studio version here...

Russ West

Loved the selection of song. Would love to hear the ministry of lost souls. One of my favourite DT tracks.

"doesn't even need amplification" Queue up Van Canto! https://youtu.be/UrxfZv6KEL0?si=OGtvyBMq-E3bakV-

Brian Begnoche

Which is funny, since that is arguably the best decade for metal.

What a great selection of Metal....thanks Doug for sharing all your thoughts on each of these! I particularly liked Deep Purple, DT and Devin Townsend. So glad you really got into Symphony X too Doug...they are so amazing with what they do! FYI the rest of their album "The New Mythology Suite" has not got as much double-kick in...they were just going for "shock and awe" for their first track :-)

Matt B

What an incredible range, and what amazing pieces of music and musicianship here. Quite exhausting (!) but a wonderful time. Thanks Doug.

Adie

Very cool video Doug.. And speaking of Jordan Rudess being in LTE. Well that was a part to actually introduce him to Dream Theater.

Vei Hei

The video was nice, but it feels rough having nothing from the years 1980-1989 represented here.

Matthew Hackbert

Excited that AC/DC made it! That was my favorite in the poll.

Pam Norris

Very glad that you made this a bit longer and fit Symphony X and Tool in there as well, awesome songs! And awesome episode :)

Berniyh

Woot woot!

Robert Thornton

Avant garde music. Now that would be an interesting FF video. Love the diverse selections of metal that were voted in. DT song. Unless I am mistaken, the first time JP plays a 8 string guitar on an album is with Awaken the Master on their latest album.

Arrow2theACL

Aenema would be worth a complete listen one day! :)

Only listened to the start and end so far Doug - past my bedtime here in the UK! But great stuff again. I thought your discussion at the end about what IS "metal" was especially interesting, and enlightening. "Metal" did not really exist as a genre in the early '70s, when I "came of age" musically. Back then, Sabbath, Purple, Heep, Zep and the like were "heavy rock". I remember the term "heavy metal " started to appear in the late-1970s with bands like Maiden and Saxon, although I THINK it was Judas Priest that I first heard described as "metal" - memories fade, though! So your point about what is "metal" depends on when you came of age musically very much strikes a chord with me there! And you made me realise that the genre is so wide, that its very broad church encompasses a load of styles that many might not immediately term classic metal. Looking forward to catching up with the full video hopefully tomorrow. Thanks again.

If I had had the slightest notion that AC/DC would make it to the final, I would have written a much more helpful description!! But it was a real Hail Mary pass - so sorry, Doug! But thank you for playing it, and for pronouncing it A Metal Tune for all to hear!! WooHoooo!!

Margaret Barnes

Thank you, Doug. What a maze of metals - you surely have more stamina than me to take on this variety of styles and approaches. I got there, but needing to go round again to assimilate.
